Chocolate Origin

Chocolate Origin 1

Having eaten so many chocolate fudge cakes, this one from Chocolate Origin left a deep impression for its thick layer of chocolate ganache. The ganache layer is actually thicker than the sponge as opposed to most other fudge cakes. For someone like Yuan who prefers mousse and ganache over sponge, this chocolate fudge cake earns a thumbs up from him. A 6-inch cake goes at $29 which is certainly value for money.

Vicky's Chocolate Fudge Cake

Chocolate Fudge Cake is one type of cake that I started to enjoy only after the birth of this blog and prior to that, I simply cannot understand how these one product shops (or rather close to) can survive on just selling chocolate fudge cakes.

Searching through the internet, forums will mention big names such as Lana Cake Shop, Jane's Cake Station, Choc.a.Bloc, Awfully Chocolate when asked for recommendations for chocolate fudge cake.

I can't remember the details of each cake but for sure, I am one that fancy soft and moist chocolate sponge so Lana Cake Shop is the least favoured among the four but that is also one cake shop whom many has grown up with and has stirred a fair bit of rebuttal in the internet community.

Whenever, Lana Cake Shop is mentioned, Vicky's Chocolate Fudge Cake will definitely be seen somewhere in the same post and it is also through the comments on my Lana Cake Shop that makes me purchased a cake from them.

IMG_0239A

Now I know why, apart from Lana Cake Shop adopting a rectangular shape for their Chocolate Fudge Cake, this is the other that is in the same shape.

IMG_0283A

As described by most, this is extremely soft and moist with a smooth chocolate fudge. Comparing this with Awfully Chocolate's All Chocolate which Yuan had on the same day, he felt that Vicky's sponge is slightly salty and chewy while he described Awfully Chocolate's to be a sweeter and more moist variant.

To me, my preference inclined more towards Vicky's and this is definitely a good alternative to my favourite Choc.a.bloc for both convenience and pricing. While Choc.a.bloc priced its 800gm cake at $32 and Awfully Chocolate selling their 1kg All Chocolate at $51.60, Vicky's 1kg Chocolate Fudge Cake cost merely $35. In addition, with Vicky's pleasant service as what most has highlighted, this definitely worth a trip and many thanks to my readers for recommending their Chocolate Fudge Cake to us.

No. 48. Banana Choco Fudge from Choc a bloc

IMG_6970A

I have only eaten Choc.a.bloc once and it is one cake that I really like but not my family members for the same reason. Among the chocolate fudge cakes I have tried till date, I like this the most for the creamy fudge and the extremely moist cake. The resulting factor is it being very refreshing but yet satisfying.

IMG_6975A

Moreover, this cake uses sliced banana which makes it better over Awfully Chocolate's Chocolate Banana but from my understanding, I do know of a few people who fancy the latter more. Ultimately, taste is subjective and you will only which one is better after you try it.

Dark Angel @ Gobi

Dark Angel
A chocoholic's must have. Pure chocolate heaven embedded in moist rich dark chocolate cake ($7.30++)

Those that love Ben and Jerry's cookie dough will love the dark angel. Embedded within chocolate fudge is what taste like molten chocolate brownie before it is fully baked. I personally loved the dark angel but Fen does not like the sticky and starchy feeling of the chocolate.

Familie Chocolade

Familie Oven is a home baker specializing in chocolate fudge cake. This cake consisting of 2 layers of chocolate sponge with chewy chocolate fudge, are only sold in 2 sizes - Regular ($26) Large ($50).

A slice for you?

Solely by visual inspection, this cake wins by the gloss on the surface which really makes this cake looks so yummy.

Scent-wise, I felt that the chocolate smell is not strong enough, in fact there is a tint of butter smell.

Taste-wise, this cake is really old school, similar to those found in the neighbourhood confectionery, those that your mum would buy for your breakfast (Not sure if I am in the wrong generation). The chocolate jelly is kind of chewy and you will be able to peel off the whole layer. Do note that dark chocolate is used so it is a pity that it was not thick enough, thus not rich enough to pit against the industry leaders. However after letting my family members (2 + 5) try it, they seem to enjoy it. Hence I guess sometimes simplicity is good.

Soft enough, not heaty and the most important thing, not overly sweet and thus widely accepted.

Chocolate fudge cake

Chocolate Fudge ($6.50+), claims to use Valrhona chocolate, this cake is meltingly smooth, sense and rich. Although Yuan has a liking for Laurent's chocolate truffle slice, this one fails to catch his attention for its tough and dry texture. The chocolate sponge is surprisingly alittle salty to his liking. For me, I would say that this cake has a better quality chocolate and higher cocoa content when compared to Awfully chocolate, Choc.a.bloc, Jane's cake station and Lana cake shop but at this price, I would prefer to pay alittle more for Laurent's chocolate tart to curb my chocolate craving or rather the double chocolate pralines from the Patissier will be my choice when it comes to chocolate at the Patissier.

Chocolate fudge cake

Note that the serving portion shown in the picture is not the actual size of the cake. The actual portion is about 2 to 2.5x of what is shown in the picture. However, this is the portion of each cake if one orders the dessert platter (small - $25, premium - $30) which consists of bite size "petite" cakes and some others specially made for the platters, e.g. macaroons, chocolate balls, etc.

Opus Deli has their chocolate fudge cakes served in 2 versions, Original ($2.30) and Dark ($2.70). When eaten back to back, there isn’t a distinct difference between the two and we thought that the chocolate fudge is alittle thin to bring out the goodness of chocolate.

Chocolate fudge cakes

As for the chocolate sponge, it is closer to what Lana Cake Shop offers; a little dry cake sponge with a thin layer of chocolate fudge. Depending on what one looks for in a chocolate fudge cake, I would say this is worth a try for chocolate fudge cake fix for its convenient location and that they sell it in sliced. Yuan however felt that the it would be better if the layer of fudge is thicker.

For a quick recap, we thought that the chocolate fudge cakes from the following places has the mentioned niche,

Lana Cake Shop
The most consistent old-school taste since Ms. Violet Kwan has started

Jane’s Cake Station
Jelly-like chocolate fudge

Choc.a.bloc
Creamy chocolate fudge with extremely moist chocolate sponge

Awfully chocolate

No. 30. Double Chocolate Blackout from P.S. cafe

I have split the entries on P.S. cafe into 3 so that it will help in the classification while using the dropdown window...

So, first and foremost, how can sgcake missed out the most famous cake in P.S. cafe... or also known to be the Most Chocolately in the 50 yummiest cakes

Chocolate Cake

Listed as No. 30. Double Chocolate Blackout, with the following description,
"This sinful, mile-high chocolate fudge cake is made for serious chocolate lovers. Eat is topped with New Zealand Vanilla ice-cream"

Double Chocolate Blackout Cake

If one were to screen through the reviews written at HGW, most have recommended this cake, so how do we cake gurus find it.
____________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments
According to one of the reviews posted by HGW (posted by Petite Mummy), the ice-cream served with the chocolate cake is from Movenpick. However, we didn't like the ice-cream so much because the one served with the chocolate cake has ice crystals and in terms of the strength of vanilla scent, it is pretty weak...

2 things I will look out for a chocolate fudge cake, namely the texture of the chocolate sponge and the richess of the chocolate fudge.

For the chocolate sponge, it is sufficiently moist and is no doubt rich. However, when the chocolate drizzle cools, the cake will also lose its softness, so do eat it when it is served warm.

Chocolate fudge, on the other hand, is pretty creamy, closer to what choc.a.bloc. offers.

Overall, most would have known that this is an insane portion which needs to be shared. If not, it is just too cloying.

One of my colleagues has it back to back with Lana chocolate cake and she felt that the double chocolate blackout wins hands down in terms of chocolate richness.
____________________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

Been working late for the past 2 weeks to type my comments. Anyway here are my views towards the Double Chocolate Blackout cake.

Despite, the generous serving of the cake and chocolate fudge, I find that this cake reminds me of the apollo chocolate cake. It has that chewy texture and the chocolate fudge tasted a little wierd. Not sure if I was getting picky with my chocolates.

Simply Chocolate by Victoria

I can’t recall how I come across Decadence Cakes but since it is still in my browsing history, I have decided to order Simply Chocolate and ChocoNanas. That was the aftermath of eating the Banana Choco Fudge from choc.a.bloc with my colleagues and I couldn’t resist the temptation of a chocolate cake.

If you are wondering where the shop is, this is another home baker located at Holland Drive and as usual, I have requested reduced sugar in both cakes.

Victoria was very helpful and was prompt in replying. Knowing that I am concerned about the overall sweetness of the cake, she suggested Blackforest or Strawberry and Mango Cream. Moreover, ChocoNanas is a mousse cake which cannot be kept too long without refrigeration.

Through the phone call, she realized I was sharing with 2 other people and how sweet was she to divide, decorate and pack them individually. The service is superb.

Simply Chocolate is described as happiness can be found in the simple thing; take a bite into her signature light chocolate chiffon cake, coated with fine unadulterated dark chocolate ganache. Ecstatic!

and is sold at $35 (1kg), $45 (1½kg) and $55 (2 kg).
____________________________________________________________

Fen’s comments

I really love this chocolate cake. The chocolate sponge is so soft and the fudge complements it wonderfully. Although this is slightly different from chocolate fudge cake due to its lighter (of course, less moist) texture and chocolate buttercream is used instead, this is definitely an alternative to chocolate fudge cake, particularly if one doesn’t want to travel to Bedok or Jalan Kayu.

The cake is so fresh that a short while out from the chiller will make the cake wobbly, thus explaining the lack of photos for this cake. The dark chocolate ganache is no doubt smooth and rich that gives the “oomph” factor.

Believe it or not, if not for me attempting to save the final 2 pieces for my family, this one-third portion would have been gobbled up by Yuan and I during dinner. Highly recommended!!!

However, in all chocolate cakes, it still voice down to personal preference, my family prefers the Blackforest while my colleagues, including Yuan and myself, find this heavenly.

Yuan’s comments

I am really impressed by Victoria. Given this standard it is easily comparable with most cakes which we ate at expensive cafes. The cake is so good as the top layer tasted like melted chocolate and not chocolate cream. The chiffon is dense and has this strong chocolate smell. Maybe the only down side is that there is a layer of chocolate cream in between. I would have preferred it to use the same chocolate as what was coated on the surface. In general this is a must try for all those who love chocolate fudge cakes.

Truffle Cake from Laurent Bernard Chocolatier

Laurent Bernard chocolatier opens a new branch along Portsdown Road and as mention in the previous entry, it has a very secluded and isolated location that gives a very peaceful place for high tea.

Shop facade I

I didn't take the interior of the cafe not because of the no photo policy but rather I didn't have my point and shoot camera with me. These pictures are taken by my daddy but trust me, the alfresco dining area on the other side of the cafe is really pleasant.

Shop facade II

I love the rich and dark chocolate coating of this cake, it has the chewy and fudgey taste. The sponge is similar to the flourless cake but the truffle brings it to a different level, a combined effect of a cake and mousse. Overall, the texture is good but highlighted by daddy, this cake is on the sweet side, particularly the chocolate fudge and thus he prefers the fudge cake from Classic cakes, Jane's cake station and Awfully chocolate. However, with my medicine coated tongue, I prefer this over the fudge cake from Classic cakes and Awfully chocolate.

Similarly to the flourless chocolate cake, each slice of truffle cake costs $6.80 (excluding 7% GST).

____________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

I tried this again 3 days later and I don't deny the fact that this fudge cake is one of the best. Why is that so? Because it has the richest chocolate fudge with a springy chocolate sponge among the entire lot we have tried and we felt that it deserved to be on the top of our
favourite list. So in the next few days, we will remove one of them from our special and this will make it to our newly favourite 4.

I thought the sweetness was just right. Maybe daddy finds it too rich and he prefers the moist chocolate fudge cake.

____________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments
This is undoubtly one of the best chocolatate fudge cakes which I have eaten. The overall feeling is like eating slightly melted cadbury chocolate with soft chocolate chiffon. So simple yet not many cake shops does this as well as Laurent.

Chocolate fudge cake from Prima Deli

Rich chocolate sponge and fudge with generous spread of decadent, premium dark chocolate from Belgium.

Was out to grab some lunch with daddy and decided to get some pastries for high tea. As usual, when I spot my target, I will not let it easily. Scanning what is available at Prima Deli, I know what I want and ta dah, gotten a slice of chocolate fudge cake.

Priced at $3.70 per slice, this baby has a combination of choc.a.bloc and cedele chocolate fudge. Why do I say so, notice the lighter colour chocolate fudge at the top surface of the cake, from my vague impression, this is similar to the choc.a.bloc creamier and less chocolately fudge. The darker chocolate fudge seen in between the chocolate sponge is simlar to the one from cedele, sweeter and slighter richer than the top layer.

Generally, the cake is relatively sweet but in terms of moisture, I think it is pretty good. Thus, if you don't mind the sweetness, chocolate fudge cakes are readily available in sliced form.

Cedele's Chocolate Fudge Cake

This two layered chocolate cake with super rich chocolate fudge is a must-try. It is wildly sought because of its soft texture that oozes seductively when cut into!

Before I continue, I had this cake with my daddy earlier this afternoon but I didn't bring my cammie out thus I got to resort to obtain this picture from a blog, daily musings: the finer things in life.

After eating the famous chocolate fudge cakes in Singapore, I thought this was not too bad. At least, it is chocolately enough with a sufficient layer of chocolate fudge. The thing that the major players win hands down is that Cedele's fudge cake was not moist enough. In terms of chocolate content, it is comparable.

However, daddy didn't think likewise, he thought the amount of baking powder added was too much thus giving a powdery after-taste. In addition, he prefers the chocolate used in Classic cakes and even Cafe Cartel.

So, I wouldn't term this as a "must try" but edible if you happen to pass by Cedele. Ultimately, convenience is also a factor when it comes to curbing cake cravings.

Yuan's comments

Best ever Chocolate cake: This cake bears a close resemblance to the Americano from choc a bloc. It uses dark chocolate and the chocolate sponge is thick. The main difference from the Americano is that this cake is softer and has less chocolate over the cake. Each slice of this costs $3.50.

No.43. Chocolate fudge cake from Jane's Cake Station

Some may feel that the fudge is not chewy enough. I have to admit that it is not chocolately enough but if you recall my choc a bloc entry, high chocolate content results in the loss of texture (refering to Americano). The texture of the sponge is pretty similar to choc a bloc except that the fudge is more jelly-like than choc a bloc.

Frankly speaking, after trying all the 4 major players (Lana, Awfully, Jane's and Choc a bloc), apart from Lana having a slight rough texture and thinner fudge, I can't tell the difference in the cake sponges between the remaining 3. As for the chocolate fudge, Jane's is more to the jelly sort, Choc a bloc is more to the creamier sort, Awfully is in between the 2.

Anyway, from the Sunday Times...
"Contrary to its dark, heavy and decadent appearance, this chocolate fudge cake is light. It melts in the mouth and is not cloyingly sweet."

No. 48. Banana Choco Fudge from Choc a bloc

Outside Choc.a.bloc

Here is the box...

Banana Choco Fudge
$30 for 800gm

From the Sunday Times,
"Freshly sliced bananas are soaked in creamy soft chocolate fudge, then crammed between two layers of dark, moist chocolate sponge and drizzled with dark chocolate pearls to produce this slice of heaven."

Taken from choc.a.bloc webbie,
"Recommended by Seventeen Magazine...
Freshly sliced bananas soaked in creamy soft fudge, then crammed between 2 layers of dark moist chocolate sponge, a sure winner with all chocolate fans"

Yuan: This cake is slightly softer. I guess most banana chocolate cakes have the tendency to sink when left outside the fridge. It has a thick layer of chocolate and a layer of banana at the bottom. Despite the amount of chocolate fudge, it is not sweet and they do not use sweet banana. I would say texture-wise it is good but it would be better sweeter.

Fen: Surprisingly, this cake is not very well-liked by my family. Maybe it has too much chocolate fudge, thus making the cake very soggy. My sisters found the texture too soft and wet that it tasted like porridge...

Personally, I thought it was not bad but having tried Lana, Awfully Chocolate and Jane's cake station, I realized I am not a fan of chocolate fudge cake. I thought it is not chocolately enough and thus, would very much prefer chocolate mousse than any of the above. In fact, the impression left behind by the Hazelnut Royaltime was so deep that I can imagine it melting in my mouth...

In short, the bananas are not very sweet and thus the banana taste is not very strong. Very soft and moist sponge and due to its not-so-sweet taste, it reminds me of the reduced sugar of Awfully Chocolate Cake (oh yes, they do allow a 5% reduction of sweetness).

According to the staff, Mom's Choco Fudge Cake, Crunchie Chocolate Fudge, Vermont Choco Fudge and Banana Choco Fudge have the same chocolate sponge which differs in its filling. Bottom line, if you have tried any of the above, you have indirectly tried 4 of their cakes.

Latest update: I brought this cake for my colleagues and they simply love it... What a way to kick start a Monday... Sugar rush!!! (Actually, in total there are 5, the 4th ones finds it better than Awfully Chocolate while the 5th... got to sms him first)

"I had the banana choco fudge cake in a go despite having breakfast.... my stomach was growling...it was really good.. it just melts in my mouth, tot I can go back and share it with my mum n sis but now cannot le.."

"Yup yup I absolutely LOVED the banana choco fudge cake. Thanks Yufen! Left me sweet the whole morning"

" apparently none of us could resist. haha. yes, the banana choco fudge cake is heavenly! it feels light but packs a strong choco punch. >_<"

Americano Choco Fudge from Choc.a.bloc

I was debating between Americano Choco Truffle and Royale Choco Truffle but alas, guess I didn't have a choice as 3 days in advance was not enough to order the Royale Choco Truffle (apparently their order has maxed out for this cake on my preferred collection date) and I was lucky to get the Americano Choco Truffle due to the cancellation of one of the orders.

Americano Choco Fudge
$40 for 1 kg

Taken from choc.a.bloc webbie,

"Garnished with European Couverture filled with rich creamy sponge. The layers of chocolate is certain to leave you coming back for more."

Yuan: For this cake, the lady at the shop advised me that the cake tasted better when it is a little warm. Initially i didn't thought too much about it but when we brought it home to slice, it really required some strength to slice it. (The cake was thawed for about an hour) I suggest that the reader may consider leaving it in the microwave or leave it to thaw for about 4 hours.

Anyway the overall feel of this cake is that it is somewhat like a brownie. The thing that i like about this cake was that it is dark chocolate and has a slight alcohol taste. However as readers may have observed, i generally prefer chocolate mousse and like my chocolate cake alittle sweet. Thus the texture and the non sweetness was not to my liking.

Fen: I liked this cake after microwaving it, tasted like the warm chocolate cake from BakerZin, although it is nice after it has been thawed from 3:20pm to 10:37pm. I guessed there is a compromise when it comes to chocolate content and the texture of the cake. Chocolate mousse wins hand down in terms of its threshold to have a higher cocoa content. Thus, having shared the 1st slice of Banana Choco Fudge and Americano Choco Fudge with Yuan and after which 2nd round of Americano Choco Fudge with Yuan after dinner and then 3rd round of Banana Choco Fudge and Americano Choco Fudge after I reached home... Sorry guys, I am sick of it and no more chocolate fudge cakes for me....

Anyway, there are 3 layers of brownie like chocolate sponge, sandwiched with bitter-sweet fudge (actually sweeter than Banana Choco Fudge) and a thin layer of nuts (only in the last layer of chocolate fudge).

No. 20... Chocolate Cake from Lana Cakes

This is one cake Yuan is never convinced that it deserved to be the "top chocolate cake". What is so great about this one then? Till now, I cannot find the answer... I am serious... People who has patronized this cake shop knows about their attitude problem... Ok, the service is not that bad, just that this stall keeps me pondering why people insist this is the best...

Ok, sitting in one secluded corner of Greenwood, this shop was said to be around for a long time. I guess so, based on its decor of the shop. I didn't take the interior as I thought it was kinda rude since I don't have the habit of asking for permission... Anyway, this is how the shop will look like...

Walking alittle closer... Sorry about the flash... I thought I was behaving pretty sneaky...

Guys, before you order the cake for any occasion, it is important to check the opening hours and days... It is extremely important as it may not open on the desired date. I am not kidding you... It is a 43% probability. Relatively high...

Alright, the cake box... nothing special...

Ah... here is the cake...

I thought the focus should be on the fudge since that is what makes the cake nice...

As usual, I always try my best to provide a cross section so that you can have a clear view of what you will be expecting... Having taken so many photos of cakes, Yuan and I have mastered the art of "tasting" the cake by looking at the photo...

The cake is relatively dry in comparison to Awfully Chocolate and Jane... and frankly speaking, there is nothing fantastic about this cake... The opinion is not just from me but 7 people... It is only nice if you eat it on its own WITHOUT comparing with other cakes. Once you set a benchmark... you will be surprised by your expectation of what I would say a good chocolate fudge cake.

Before I sign off, here is the comments from the Straits Times...
"Food fads come and go but when Singaporeans want a taste of their youth, they order a Lana cake. People have tried to decode the secret of the light chocolate sponge covered with shiny chocolate fudge. Copycats have appeared and disappeared over the years, and people have tried to replicate the fudge, but no one has manage to make it quite as well as the one-woman baking institution: Mrs Violet Kwan, 80."

YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!

Anyway, the cake costs $30 for a 750g cake BUT they don't provide a cake knife and if you request for a small box to pass a slice of cake for your colleagues, 80 CENTS please...I will only give a 7 (no longer 6 after Cafe Cartel and BreadTalk) for the cake since it is alittle dry and the chocolate is not the rich kind... However, for the extra 80 cents (-0.5) and no cake knife (-0.5)... Sorry, it is only a 6/10.

Yuan's Comments

First i would say that this fudge cake has a higher cake content than fudge content. Thus maybe it is good if you like the taste of chocolate chiffon. Maybe thats what ST claims as light chocolate cake which reminds you of your childhood days. However, i don't recall paying $30 for a chocolate cake during my childhood days.

Second i beg to differ from the ST reviewers opinion that other chocolate fudge cake shops come and go. In fact, Jane cake station and awfully chocolate has been around for many years as well.

Third I think its location and attitude simply do not make business sense. It only opens 4 days a week and is located in a private estate behind NJC. I guess it is only meant for regular customers. It does not even provide knife and you have to pay for additional box. There is really little incentive to visit the shop again unless you believe in brand loyalty.

In the nutshell. I feel that this is one of the most over rated chocolate cakes around. As what Fen mentioned, it is nice if it is the first time you eat a chocolate fudge cake but once you eat more chocolate cake, you will have a second opinion. Maybe our opinions are a little biased but i cannot convinced myself why this cake is ranked above awfully. Feel free to comment.

Awfully chocolate's All chocolate

Yuan, Yanquan and I had tried this cake 4 years ago and that is right after a television program featuring Awfully Chocolate. Surprisingly, all 3 of us finds is horrible and only the "Hei" ice-cream was good. In fact, at that time, only my youngest sister knew how to appreciate this cake. Not sure why we didn't like it, maybe we didn't find the cake soft enough.

My impression changed all together after my classmate bought this cake for Xingyi's and my birthday, which is 2007. That was after I have eaten Lana's & Jane's chocolate fudge cake, Baker's Inn's chocolate Amer, Obolo's noisette and The line's chocolate mousse. So in a way, my expectation of a chocolate cake or mousse has increased.

The cake is indeed moist and soft and the chocolate fudge is really creamy. I thought it was really good but... after having a chocolate spree with Baker's Inn, I didn't like the cake as much as before. I thought the chocolate was not rich enough...

I guess cakes is a preference issue. It depends on your mood and what you have eaten over the span of the previous week. Somehow or rather, our tongue and brain are good at making comparison so this blog is only used as a reference if you are looking for a cake... Muahahaha....
