Desserts we have tried in 2012

This is an entry on some of the desserts which we tried but didn't find time to blog about in 2012.

IMG_1636

Starting from the most recent is the Cheesecake from Ruth's Chris Steak House. I liked the sour cream layer which paired well with cream cheese. Though I must admit that the mini cheesecake given to the birthday person is actually richer than the original sized one. Nonetheless this is still one of the better cheesecakes in town.

IMG_0079

Next is Noel Treasures Cake from Haagen Dazs. This was one of the festive offerings for this year. It is made up of six chocolate balls which contain 2 Haagen Dazs Ice Cream flavours in each of them. Macadamia nut is paired with strawberry cheesecake and the caramel biscuit with chocolate. I believe I need not elaborate further on the ice cream but special mention must be made for the hazelnut praline biscuit at the base. Though sticky, it is crisp and goes very well with the ice-cream. This is also a very creative way of presenting a festive cake as it has 4 flavours with minimal contamination and easy to serve (simply halve the Christmas baubles).

BananaRama

The other memorable cake is the BananaRama from The Line - Shangri La Hotel. This was the cake of the month for October 2012 and the cake which Fen bought for my Birthday. I liked this cake for its strong flavour - rich chocolate mousse as well as sweet banana puree. This was one cake which even my parents asked for a second serving. Though this may be the cake of the month, the Line Shop may allow pre-ordering of the cake as Fen has ever ordered the hotel's Strawberry Vanilla Streusel Cake (needs to be ordered one week in advance) which was no longer sold in the Line Shop. So no harm sending an email to The Line Shop for enquiry.

Le Royale

Throughout the year, we continued to frequent our favourites such as Bakerzin and Canele. Specifically After recruiting former Pastry Chef Christophe Grilo from Hilton Singapore, there was a major change to their array of cakes. Not only the outlook has changed for their signature cakes, there seems to be interesting new creations. The Le Royale has gone through many modifications since we started blogging. Comparing with the previous entry on the Le Royale, there is now a second layer of chocolate mousse and there are improvements to the texture of the mousse.

Triple Chocolate Cheese Cake

As for the Triple Chocolate Cheesecake, there is now a layer of chocolate fudge as compare to the previous version. There is also more chocolate which may delight the chocolate fans as oppose to the cheesecake fans.

Tuxedo Cake

Last but not least, Fen's favourite cake of the year. Tuxedo cake, ever since her first encounter with the cake, she has minimally made me return to Carlton 4 times last year to curb her cravings. According to her, she adore the moist chocolate cake which is not overly sweet nor cloying. This is one cake she recommends greatly to chocolate cake lover for the rich and moist texture which to a certain extent resembles a good toffee pudding.

Finally Happy New Year to all and I hope 2013 will be a fulfilling one.

Tohoku Fair (4 to 13 Dec 09)

Basement 1 @ Isetan Shaw is buzzling with booths set up for the Christmas season and one can expect sweet treats from Hilton Hotel and the Food Barn. Apart from Christmas goodies, there is a Tohoku Fair going on just outside Sun Moulin and within the supermarket itself.

Sawa Cheese Cake

One of the booths, facing the cashier, sells a variety of cheesecakes with fruity flavours and peach cake in lovely packaging. The cakes are sold frozen and comes with ice packs.

These cheesecakes come as either a whole circular form, dome-shaped or small cup-like forms (as shown in the picture) with 4 flavours, namely original, grape, orange and apple.

Sawa Cheese Cake II

For the original cheesecake, the texture is smooth (after thawing) and resembles the molten form of an ice-cream. One can expect a dominating taste of cream cheese and is definitely a light and refreshing treat.

An interesting variant of the Japanese light cheesecake and American cheesecake but these aren't cheap as a box of 4 will cost $19.80.

Oh, Sakaeya is also selling their goodies at this fair and they are located besides this cheesecake booth.

EKAC NY Cheesecakes

Cheesecakes

There are 2 types of cheesecakes offered at EKAC, namely the classic New York Cheesecake and the low in fat and calories, Tofu cheesecake.

Had The Blushing Bride (Strawberry Cheesecake) and Girl in the Green Scarf (Kiwi Cheesecake) and I chose the classic New York Cheesecake as the base. The different flavours lies in the top jelly layer and the amount of cream cheese added in the cakes are generous, giving the cake a very rich flavour. The bed of densely packed crumbed biscuits compliments nicely to the cheesecake, giving it a buttery crunch. However, this also falls apart easily, making eating alittle messy.

Triple Chocolate Cheesecake, Canele

Triple Chocolate Cheesecake

Walnut chocolate fudge cake, chocolate chip cheese cake and dark chocolate chantily. I normally do not like the cheesecake and chocolate combination however I think canele does this pretty well. The chocolate taste stands out more and the cheese just adds that creamy effect. Hence it taste like eating chocolate ice cream rather than a cheesecake. If you are a cheesecake fan, you may not like this combination however if you like chocolate, I am sure you will like this.

Mango Mascarpone

Considered to be one of 1 Caramel's signature, this cake is made up of mascarpone cheese cream on coconut crumble with mango compote as its topping. Each slice costs $8.90++ and a whole cake will be $85++.

Mango Mascarpone

Recommended by 1 Caramel's general manager, Ms Melanie Ng, this was no doubt the best among the 4 desserts we had that evening. A modern twist to a conventional cheesecake, the use of mascarpone cheese makes it less cloying. The mango compote makes the dessert refreshing. Apart from crushed biscuits and butter, the incorporation of coconut gives an extra fragrance.

No. 5 - American Cheesecake from Checkers Deli

American Cheesecake

The Hilton Singapore Cheesecakes became a hit in Singapore in the late 1990s and ask anybody for recommendation, it will be none other the popular Hilton's American Cheesecake. Described by ST 50 yummiest cakes to be a hit since it was introduced in 1970s, this cake is still a winner for its undeniably rich texture.

It has this very nice buttery cookie base as well as the baked glaze on top, making it a perfect match. This is worth the every bit of $7.30 nett.

Apart from American Cheese, Hilton also has a fair selection of flavours ranging from Blueberry, Oreo, Walnut, Marble, etc and are available as a whole @ $69.55 nett (1.5kg) and UOB cardholders can enjoy a 15% off.

Wild Rocket Signature Cheesecake

Strawberry Cheese Cake

Wild Rocket Signature Cheesecake ($9++) -

A deconstructed cheesecake with a delectable mix of ice-cream, cream cheese, whipped cream, berries and crumble. Definitely doesn't taste like a typical cheesecake but its creamy texture with the crunchy crumble is a good twist from American cheesecakes. Personally, I thought it is pretty pricey, given its portion but interesting.

Moo Year's Delicious Cheese Cake

Talking about Calendar's, one of their products I will not forget is their carrot cake . I happened to give slices of carrot cake to some of my colleagues/friends and out of 8, 3 actually purchase from Calendar's, 3 were craving for carrot cakes after that while 2 found it so-so.

This time round, apart from Calendar's carrot cake, I have tried 3 flavours of their cheesecakes and I can't help but to think of Ben and Jerry while eating them.

The gorgeous Guernsey look in their Mmoolala Cheesecake with patches of pure chocolate on creamy cheese,
Mmoolala Cheesecake

The handsome Holstein, Moreoreo cheesecake
Moreoreo Cheesecake

The Seductive Strawberry Swirl with strawberries snug in cream cheese pockets
Strawberry Swirl

Calendar's cheesecakes are generally creamy and smooth. Not the most memorable one but all the flavours were well-received by my family. Strawberry Swirl had bits of strawberries in them and was not overly sour. The tangy strawberry puree provide a refreshing taste but I thought the digestive biscuit base was not crunchy enough to my liking. Oh, my bad. The base / crust is actually made from Graham crackers brought in from Los Angeles so for people who want a different type of base, don't miss out what Calendar's got to offer.

Moreoreo cheesecake had a thick oreo base which was better-received among my sisters and me. What is good about it was the reduced sweetness but like the Strawberry Swirl, it lacks the crunch from the oreo bits.

Had a mixed feeling about Mmoolala Cheesecake as the sourish bit of cream cheese does confuse the taste of chocolate, since I have not come across a good chocolate cheesecake, I shall reserve my comments. Last note, there is an unaccountable bitterish aftertaste, it might contain some nutmeg for this flavour.

All in all, its smooth texture and the effort to make the various flavours looks different from the conventional, monotonous, single-colour cheesecakes, are worth mentioning. As the cheesecakes are not rich with cream cheese, neither was it tinted with lots of lemon juice, they were pretty neutral to be accepted by most. Also, Calendar's strives to make it better with quality topmost ingredients and to keep the oils cholesterol friendly, butter unsalted, sugar reduced, omit the salt if that can be done. Definitely appeal to the health conscious category.

Currently, they are having a promotion of selling their dairy delicious at $39 till 30th April. The cakes are 8" (>1.2kg) and delivery will be waived for any purchase above $150 per location.

A cheesy business @ Opus Deli

I was pretty surprised at the pricing of the New York Cheesecake. A decent portion of cake priced at only $2.70 and its taste was not compromised at all. Although this is not the richest cheesecake I have tried, I do like the soft, creamy and smooth texture. There is nothing special about the base since it is the softened version of a digestive biscuit and for those who prefers a cheesecake with little or no lemon, this is worth a try and does not have much lemon in it. But Yuan felt that it was a little sour and doesn't stand out from the other cheese cakes e.g. Marble Cheese Cake from Hilton.

New York Cheesecake

The other version of cheesecake they have at Opus Deli is the Chezcake m Blueberry and Chezcake m Strawberry which adopts a muffin structure. I didn’t try this but my sisters were fine with it. In fact, they find these more appealing to the New York Cheesecake. These are sold at $3.20 for 2 pieces.

Rum and Raisin Cheesecake

This is another popular item, the Rum and Raisin Cheesecake ($6.80). This is the first cheesecake which we have come across so far which contains alcohol and being a fan of rum and raisin ice-cream, Yuan kind of liked the combination as it moistens the usually dry and sticky cheesecake, thus adopting a similar texture as a "cheesy" mousse. I guess this is a must-try for rum and raisin fans like Yuan.

Rum and Raisin Cheesecake

On the personal note, I prefer my cheesecake to have minimal flavouring to allow the texture of cream cheese and the slight saltiness to stand out. As pointed out by Yuan, the addition of alcohol softens the entire texture of the cake and the resulting effect of alcohol and cream cheese does provide a different perspective to cheesecakes.

Complementary Rin Rin Cheese Tart from Pâtisserie Glacé

Our experience at Pâtisserie Glacé ends off with a complementary cheese tart and frankly speaking, it was one of the nicest cheese tart we have ever tried.

Cheese Tart
Rin Rin Cheese Tart ($3.00)
Each cheese tart sits on a cookie base, so with every bite there is a cornucopia of senses and tastes, ranging from the creamy smoothness of the cheese filling to the crunchiness of Chef Yamashita’s fragrant cookie. In the flavours versions, each is filled with real fruit puree, chocolate, etc.

I know there is a dying question in you, how many cakes did we have on that single day. Actually, we ate 4 cakes and a tart and I bought back 4 cakes for my family (which I had one the next morning)... This just prove that the cakes are good.

Fen's comments

It has a very rich cheesy after-taste like Laurent's cheesecake but what makes it perfect is the crunchy cookie base at the bottom. The entire combination is simply heavenly.

Yuan's comments

This was my personal favourite for today. The specialty of the tart lies in the cookie base, this gives the cheese tart the additional crunch and fragrance.

Laurent's cheesecake

Chocolate boutique, Laurent Bernard Chocolatier has always been known for their chocolates but one of our unexpected orders for the afternoon is their cheesecake.

IMG_6989AR

Pardon me for my poor description with cheesecakes, I am not very well-versed with cheesy terms but generally this cheesecake is extremely rich with a firm and springy texture. The cream and water content seems to be lower than New-York style cheesecake with its after-taste tipping towards the sweet side (i.e. not sour).

Yuan's comments

As Fen pointed out, I guess its never easy to describe a cheesecake. (It would be kind of wierd to say that a cheesecake is cheesy right?) This cheesecake on first bite really tasted like eating a block of chedar cheese. However as you slowly indulge in this cheesecake, you will feel slight sweetness. On the whole - worth a try.

No. 18 Twin Divine from Miss Clarity

After ignoring the recommendation from 50 yummiest cakes, I have decided to drop by Miss Clarity Cafe to try their Twin Divine. Featured as No. 18, this was described to be a rich, rich, rich and utterly divine chocolate fudge cake. Bascially, this is a Valrhona chocolate fudge cake paired with French cream cheese on a crisp digestive biscuit.

Anyway, before I move on with twin divine. This is a very casual place that doesn't charge GST and service charge so it is good for gatherings or a quick lunch. As for the decor, either you like it or you hate it. Adopting a princess-like theme with flowery paper latterns, gaily painted walls and cartoons, school canteen-like tables & chairs of green, pink and yellow BUT dim lighting? I don't know, personally, I always associate cheerful places with well-illuminated places. If it is meant to be dim, I would prefer it with more ambience than funky.

Apart from the desserts, we had fish baked rice and bacon aglio oligo. Have to give credits to their extensive menu, reasonable pricing but in terms of taste, I would say it is pretty ordinary. Nothing to rave about nor make us crave for it.
__________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

Personally, I didn't quite like this cake but at the price of $5.20 per slice, it is worth a try due to the chocolate used. Have to admit that the chocolate is smooth and creamy but I didn't like the combination of cream cheese and chocolate mousse. The cream cheese has a rubbery texture which is pretty different from American cheesecake and thus didn't compliment well enough to my liking.
____________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

This cake is similar to the mini O from NYDC. Top layer of chocolate mousse and bottom layer of cheese cake. Both layers are not that appealing though I prefer the cheese cake better than the chocolate mousse. The chocolate mousse is slightly creamy. The cheese cake tasted like philadelphia cream cheese spread. Not too bad generally but I guess I became a little choosy after eating so many cakes.

Cheesecake? also from Prego

I thought this looks the yummiest among the 3 since I had bad experience with Prego's tiramisu. It turned out that this is the most disappointing. It has a texture of a cheesecake but was soaked in some fruity syrup. So in a way, this is an extremely moist cheesecake and due to its high moisture content, it lacks the cheesy and rich texture.

Similarly to the fruit tart, it costs $4.50+.

New York Cheesecake from Aroma

Cheesecakes... I am never a fan of it. Simply too rich. I thought cheese on its own taste the best since it is salty by nature. Anyway, the last time I ate a good cheesecake was Hilton. Through this cake spree, although I have bought a couple of New York Cheesecake, the tester is never me but my dearest sister, 小湘. I generally prefer Japanese light cheesecake.

Anyway, among the few (Classic cakes, Checkers Deli, Cafe Cartel) that I managed to get a mouthful, this is pretty close to the one from Checkers Deli (Hilton, Singapore). The texture is smooth and rich, unlike the other 2 which have a slight grainy texture. In addition, it does not have a sourish after-taste (i.e. Cafe Cartel has too much lemon) and the base is the digestive biscuits sort, not the chocolate type like Classic cakes.

The only difference between this and Checkers Deli is that the latter has a nicer baked top. Also, Checkers Deli's feels like Ritz biscuits melting in your mouth and that the base is smoother and less grainy. Thus, Checkers Deli's is slightly better than Aroma's. Nevertheless, this cheesecake is still worth a try.
