Sze Chuan Court Champaign Truffle 2012

Sze Chuan Court Champaign Truffle

It was three years back since we blogged about Sze Chuan Court's Campaign Truffle. This flavour has always been pit against Raffles Hotel due to their common history. Having eaten both again this year, I must say that both mooncakes are fair consistent and are easily the better mooncakes with alcohol content. If you prefer stronger flavour, then Sze Chuan Court's version is for you. Strong liquor within a white chocolate truffle awaits you as you munch through the smooth and rich lotus paste.

If you are still keen to pick up a box, you may access their online order form here.

Chocolate Crispy Classic

Chocolate Crispy Classic (500gm)

Log cakes are often sold at a size of 1kg and when the clique is small, most will be pondering what to do with the excess, particularly when we want to save some room for turkey and other Christmas goodies.

We selected Fairmont's Chocolate Crispy Classic for our Xmas gathering due to its price and size. At $19.69 (20% early bird for UOB card holders) for a 500g logcake, this is indeed reasonable. In fact, this is enough to feed 10 people though a 1kg log cake is recommended for 8-10 people.

Taste-wise, one can expect the regular chocolate log cake, a combination of chocolate buttercream and chocolate sponge cake. Fairmont does it pretty well as it does not have the powdery texture which we dread, but instead, a soft and springy sponge. Moreover, the additional chocolate crunch makes this different from the conventonal chocolate logcake. The only setback is it being alittle sweet to my liking, so for those who are particular with sweetness, one might want to check with the hotel to reduce its sugar content.

Chocolate Crispy Classic

Apart from Chocolate Crispy Classic, Fairmont Singapore also has the following options,

Re-invented Pear Helene ($25+ / 500gm; $48+ / 1 kg)
Grand Cru Chocolate Mousse with Pear Creme Brulee, Caramelised Hazelnut & Sacher Sponge

Re-invented Pear Helene

Raspberry Napoleon Yule ($25+ / 500gm; $48+ / 1 kg)
Champagne Raspberry & Lychee Supreme with Golden Rose Jelly, Pistachio Biscuit & Marshmallow

Raspberry Napoleon Yule

Fruity Hazelnut Crunch ($23+ / 500gm; $46+ / 1 kg)

Lunch @ Equinox Restaurant

Equinox @ Swissotel

From the days of Compass Rose, I have always wanted to visit this place. Now that Compass Rose is no longer around, Equinox Complex, a group of eateries took over, at the tallest hotel in Singapore.

Dining with altitude

With full length glass windows, Equinox rewards its diners with a bird's-eye view of the beautiful skyline of Singapore's Central Business District.

With a stunning, panoramic floor-to-ceiling views of Singapore and its interior decorated with teak, paper lanterns and wooden trellises, one can expect a nice blend of Asian and contemporary dining atmosphere.

Lunch is available in the form of a semi-buffet from Monday to Saturday. At $59++, one gets to choose a main course and supplement with a buffet bar. Here is a preview of what is offered at the buffet bar.

Cheese

Among the buffets we have been so far, I have to admit that the selection of cheese offered at Equinox is one of the largest.

Appetizers

The appetizers offered includes Thai Style Seafood Salad, Tomato with Mozzarella Cheese, Beetroot Salad, Prawn Cocktail, Unagi Temaki, Char Grilled Vegetable Salad with Balsamic Dressing, German Potato Salad and Salmon Platters.

Petite appetizers

New Zealand Oysters

Selection of fresh seafood is also impressive. Though there is no crayfish nor lobsters, Fresh Shrimp, Sri Lankan Crabs, Fresh Water Prawns, Pristine Oysters, Green Mussels and New Zealand Oysters will sound tempting to most. However, having ate oysters in a few buffet venue lately, it seems that the oysters offered at Cafe Biz is the largest by far.

Sushi and Sashimi

The above photos covers about 40% of the buffet section. Though the selection may seems limited to some, do bear in mind that we still have the a-la-carte main course.

Steamed Seabass with Superior Chinese Herbs, Asian Vegetables and Shitake Mushrooms
Steamed Seabass with Superior Chinese Herbs, Asian Vegetables and Shitake Mushrooms

The 2 main courses which we tried were the Beef Onglet and the Seabass.
Although I have requested the beef to be served medium well, the meat is not tough at all. The meat was served with char-grilled fragrance and a juicy core. The accompanying potato is lightly salted with a baked skin that compliments perfectly with the meat.

With the use of soy sauce, wolfberry and chinese parsley, the seabass which Fen had, tasted close to a Cantonese steamed fish. The fish is served hot, tender and fresh so Fen has no complain with her choice of main course.

Berry Mousse and Rose Bavarian Mousse

Depending on one's preference, the selection of desserts may be extensive to some but limited to others. Equinox's dessert bar focus lesser on chocolate with selection ranging from Blueberry or Pear crumble, Financier, Berry Mousse, Rose Bavarian Mousse, Soft chocolate Cake with Dry Fruit and Nuts, Peach Tart, Cheesecake and Brownies.

Dessert shooters

Apart from the cakes, shooter desserts such as Pineapple Compote, Lychee Jus, Apricot with Cream Cheese and Mix Berry Vodka Jus are available for that afternoon.

Lastly, at the other end of the dessert bar, one will be rewarded with chocolate fondue (includes dark, milk and white) and home-made mango sorbet, raspberry sorbet and chocolate ice-cream. Since Movenpick sponsors a fridge for the restaurant, one can expect a flavour or 2 from Movenpick's selection of ice-cream.

Some may find the desserts not cold enough to their liking but when it comes to taste, we were indeed impressed by most of their desserts, particularly the Rose Bavarian Mousse and Pineapple Compote. Rose Bavarian Mousse is light, refreshing and brings out a strong scent of Rose while Pineapple Compote is a good variant to the apple crumble. Butter cookie crumble with vanilla mousse served with a slight sourish pineapple puree.

Chef Hugh Styles with the PacoJet

We were honoured by the opportunity to visit the kitchen whereby Chef Hugh Styles explained to us how to differentiate between home-made and commercial ice creams; and also the effects of emulsifiers on ice-cream. He introduced the PacoJet which does its mixing at 5000 rpm in vacuum. A frozen block of Avocado Cream becomes so velvetly smooth within minutes, leaving us impressed at the end of the demonstration.

The view Equinox offers

Overall it was a excellent experience dining at Equinox. I am looking forward to my second visit.

Just our opinion, if you derive satisfaction from variety in a buffet, we will not recommend Equinox but suggest Melt, The World Cafe or the Line.

However for us, it has come to a point that we don't try everything on the buffet bar and we felt that this is one of our favourite place for hotel buffets, considering there were a few dishes that make us go back for more.

$59++ may sound expensive but do keep in mind that some hotels priced their lunch buffets above $40++ but without the ambience and view this place gets to offer (E.g. Weekday Buffet Lunch @ Melt, The World Cafe - $54++, The Line - $45++, Bar & Billiard Room - $58++, Carousel - $40++, Marriott Cafe - $44++).

For a detailed menu of what Equinox gets to offer, they are available here.

Lastly, many thanks to Herni for helping us to seek approval from the Equinox management to take the photos and we greatly appreciate the warm hospitality and demonstration given by Chef Hugh Styles.

Tiramisu from Prego

Earlier on during the Tiramisu spree, we specially made a trip to Prego to try their Tiramisu and was pretty disappointed due to the dry savoiardi sponges. In addition, the mascarpone cheese was so thick and sticky. Thus, when my colleague's sister bought 3 pastries from Prego and of which one of them is a Tiramisu, I was indeed disappointed.

BUT it wasn't the case, the mascarpone cheese is light and the savoiardi sponges was well-soaked in espresso and liquor. One word to describe this, Yummy!!! I thought it was something similar to twelve + one but with a stronger alcohol taste.

By the way, I went to check out the price. Each of these cost $7+.

Chocolate Fruit Tart from Prego

This was the second favourite after the Tiramisu. Since I have tried a fair bit of chocolate these days, my expectation tentatively increases. This is basically a dark chocolate tartlet with custard cream, vanila sponge and different fruits topped on it. I would say there is nothing special about it but is pretty light and small.

Each of this costs $4.50+.

Cheesecake? also from Prego

I thought this looks the yummiest among the 3 since I had bad experience with Prego's tiramisu. It turned out that this is the most disappointing. It has a texture of a cheesecake but was soaked in some fruity syrup. So in a way, this is an extremely moist cheesecake and due to its high moisture content, it lacks the cheesy and rich texture.

Similarly to the fruit tart, it costs $4.50+.

Tiramisu from Prego... *Sigh*

Yuan and I are on a Tiramisu spree and it has come to a point we are quite sick of it....

Entering the main entrance of Prego leads you to Prego Deli and this is part of the showcase of their cakes and pastries at the entrance of the restaurant. Actually, the cakes looks prettier from the aerial view but I didn't want to behave like a paparazzi.

Anyway, the pastries are at $4+ per slice and some of the whole cakes offered that day were Coffee opera, Mango mouse, New York Cheesecake. In fact, a 500gm of Mango Mousse cost about $22+. That is why I always tell my friends, it is actually better to order cakes from Hotels, the quality is good and usually cheaper than the boutiques.

Tiramisu... The aerial view of the Italian
Similar to my previous Prego entry, I have gotten this picture from street directory website.

As described in the menu, Prego's Tiramisu is served in the form of
"Coffee steeped ladyfinger biscuits layered with mascarpone cheese and bitter cocoa"

Fen's comments

Based on some of the entries in forums asking for the best Tiramisu in Singapore, Prego will be one of those that were mentioned. Of course, I do come across negative comments but being one of the prestigious hotels, I think I will prefer to give them the benefit of doubt.

Known to be one of the stars of Prego, this Tiramisu kind of disappoint. As some has pointed out, the sponge seems to be too dry which might be, as what some has claimed,
being left in the refrigerator for too long. I don't mind a lower alcohol content but I do feel that one of the factors that make a good Tiramisu is a good well-soaked sponge so as to complement the mascarpone cheese well. In addition, the mascarpone cheese is just too thick and sticky which doesn't tempt me to finish the entire dessert.

I would say, I don't mind dropping Prego for their main course but not for their Tiramisu...

Yuan's comments
We came to Prego with high expectations of their Tiramisu. However this was a disappointment. As someone pointed out, look at the cocoa powder on the top of the Tiramisu and you will be able to tell the degree of moistness. After having this Tiramisu, i sort of understood what it meant. Thick layer of cocoa powder on top and dry sponge. Further this Tiramisu has no alcohol content but a strong coffee taste. Based on dryness, i think its not as good as some claim.
