Durianmisu from Goodwood Park Hotel

Durianmisu

Goodwood Park's annual Durian Fiesta has always stirred the attention of durian lovers and if one is observant enough, the hotel will release new creations every year. As for what is on next year menu, it depends greatly on the sales of individual items this year. In short, the least popular ones will be eliminated off next year menu. Hence, items such as the Durian, Pandan & Coconut Cake and Durian & Crunchy Hazelnut Tartlet are not available for this time round.

Available in two sizes ($4.80+ and $8.80+), Goodwood Park's latest creation, Durianmisu is a daring concoction of pure D24 durian pulp with the components of a regular non-alcoholic tiramisu (e.g. lady's fingers, espresso and mascarpone).

We had alongside the durian pudding ($3.50+) and durian strudel ($8.80+ per slice); so this fails to outshine the others. Although the durian pulp is nicely infused into the smooth and refreshing mascarpone, the contrasting coffee-soaked sponge fingers makes the overall taste confusing.

Apart from the durian pastries available at the Deli, 6 durian delights namely the Durian Oreo cake, Durianmisu, Durian roll, Durian pudding, Durian puff and Durian pancake are available in the regular dessert buffet in Coffee Lounge during lunch and dinner from 1 June to 25 July 2010 @ $24.80++ per person (Dessert Buffet with Durian Pastries only).

For take-aways, all durian pastries are available from 1st March 2010 to 25th July 2010 at the Deli.

Tiramisu @ The Line Shop

Tiramisu

You won't miss this unique pryamid shaped tiramisu at The Line Shop.

On first bite, you may easily mistaken this to be coffee mousse cake however the sticky texture is a giveaway of mascarpone. What I particularly liked about this tiramisu is the kahlua-soaked, espresso-dripped savoiardi in the middle (note that we are refering to the top layer, not the bottom layer of sponge) for its "expresso oozing out" effect.

Tiramisu II

Something different from a conventional tiramisu since the coffee is also infused in the mascarpone layer and given the densely soaked savoiardi and moist sponge, it is a refreshing treat when served chilled.

Each slice of tiramisu costs $6.75+. There is no credit card discount but a 30% discount for whole cakes and 50% discount for sliced cakes after 6pm everyday.

Tiramisu by Aroma

Last year in our tiramisu special, we gave Aroma top spot for tiramisu. This year we revisited Aroma. Will our verdict remain? Read on...

Tiramisu

Appearance wise, the tiramisu looks pretty consistent apart from using white chocolate sheets instead of milk chocolate. The miniature tiramisu and "chocolate well" remains.

Tastewise, I think the standard is about the same however it does not seem to have any alcohol content as opposed to the last time we tried. Slightly sweet and you will feel the expresso from the soaked savoiardi sponge cake. I guess it's still nice except that I would have prefered them to soak the savoiardi cake in liquor.

Nevertheless it does remind us of BakerZin's tiramisu and I would say it is still the better few but having read the comments and reviews on tiramisu, I guessed the general public would prefer stronger liquor content in this classic Italian dessert, which this tiramisu is lacking.

Note that the sliced cakes are sold at $10 for every 2 slices from 5pm to 9:30pm and half price from 9:30pm to 10pm.

EKAC Tiramisu

Tiramisu

An interesting name derived from Everyone Kneads A Cake, EKAC (pronounced "eat cake") is a new shop near Biopolis and the NTU alumni house.

EKAC was first mentioned in Hotel Intercontinental's tiramisu and the website EKAC put up makes their bakes interesting. Jil, the boss of EKAC is kind enough to allow me to mix my party platter and thus I am able to try their Classic Tiramisu aka The Bachelor and their new creation, Rum N Raisin Tiramisu.

Classic Tiramisu, their best seller, is the one that is dusted with only cocoa powder. This is described to consist of home-made sponge fingers saturated with Lavazza espresso and liqueur, sandwiched by decadent layers of mascarpone cheese and topped with rich Valrhona dark cocoa.

As for Rum N Raisin Tiramisu, the one that is dusted with icing sugar is their newest addition to EKAC Tiramisu range.

As the tiramisu is present in small plastic cups with spoon provided, this is convenient to be shared with colleagues and friends. As for the taste, the mascarpone layer has a sticky texture (may be due to a higher proportion of yolks to white). The overall texture is moist with its mascarpone layer being more outstanding. For people who like their tiramisu to be very strong in alcohol, EKAC's rum and raisin tiramisu can be considered for its strong punch of alcohol content.

A platter of 12 pieces costs $24 and there will be a $5 delivery charge.

Perla's Tiramisu

Tiramisu

Like other desserts from Perla's Pastry Boutique, Tiramisu is no doubt refreshing and light.

Of course, there are two major types of tiramisu, the alcoholic and the non-alcoholic. This one has no traces of alcohol at all. Despite that, it is still good in my opinion for its light, smooth and soft mascarpone cream.

In addition, the sponge fingers are not drenched with espresso, thereby has the right amount of moisture. However, the coating of cocoa powder is alittle too much since this results in a dry canopy. Definitely one of the better Tiramisu I have tried so far but note, it is pretty expensive ($8.80 per cup).

Pretty impressed by the mascarpone cheese for its smooth and light texture but yet the strength of cheezy-ness is not compromised. Although the cake is not overly soaked with espressor or liquor, the overall combination is worth a try.

Tiramisu from the Patissier

Tiramisu ($6.50+), an all-time favourite, is one that requires no introduction. This light mascarpone cheese with delicate coffee-doused sponge layers didn't impress Yuan due to its sweetness. However, I personally like the thin alternating layers of sponge and mascarpone cheese. The tiramisu is not drenched with liquor nor espresso but its moist enough to appeal to the majority.

Tiramisu from B Bakery

The owner prompted us to choose her tiramisu as this common creation might be easier to compare with the others we have tried so far. Indeed, this is one of the better tiramisu we have tried.

Tiramisu ($4.80)

Unlike rum which is commonly used in most tiramisu, B Bakery has theirs served with marsala wine which according to the owner, is what original Italian tiramisu are supposed to be. However, Yuan and I personally felt that masala is generally milder and lacks the punch when compared to rum.

After reading one of Ice's recent entries, I have started to pay more attention to the firmness of mascarpone cheese and this one seems to fit her description in which it is firm enough to hold the sponges. However, I personally prefer mascarpone cheese mixed with zabaglione custard or creme anglaise for a lighter touch.

Last thing to point out, the amount of cocoa powder sprinkled on the tiramisu was too much, hence providing a dry layer. We actually dusted the excess off and felt that it tasted better with lesser cocoa powder.

Tiramisu with Roasted Hazelnut Log Cake

This is the 3rd logcake of this week and was specially ordered for my youngest sister birthday. Ritz Carlton has never disappointed in terms of promptness in replying emails, their service and the quality of food served and truly indeed, this log cake didn't disappoint my entire family.

I have previously ordered their "Mango Mousse with Mango Jelly topped with Fresh Mango", which was also featured in the Sunday Times 50 best cakes and has so far been the nicest Mango creation I have ever tried. Just based on these 2 experiences, I can dare say that the ingredients used are fresh and generous.

In my earlier entry, I have made a comment saying that log cakes might need a coarser cake to hold the structure but Ritz Carlton has proved me wrong. The outer ring of the log cake is the same vanilla sponge used in their Mango Mousse, thus uniquely crisp on the exterior and soft on the inside. The mascarpone cheese is light and refreshing while the savoiardi sponges is mixed with hazelnuts to provides the extra crunch. The dark brown core is well-soaked with espresso and rum. Wow, indeed a fantastic tiramisu with an impressive layout.

Ritz Carlton has dedicated a website for this festive season and is comprehensive if one is looking for pictorial catalog of festive goodies or their pricing of buffet lunches and dinners.

Sparklette happens to drop by the Chihuly Lounge and has captured pictures of their log cakes.

Tiramisu from Prego

Earlier on during the Tiramisu spree, we specially made a trip to Prego to try their Tiramisu and was pretty disappointed due to the dry savoiardi sponges. In addition, the mascarpone cheese was so thick and sticky. Thus, when my colleague's sister bought 3 pastries from Prego and of which one of them is a Tiramisu, I was indeed disappointed.

BUT it wasn't the case, the mascarpone cheese is light and the savoiardi sponges was well-soaked in espresso and liquor. One word to describe this, Yummy!!! I thought it was something similar to twelve + one but with a stronger alcohol taste.

By the way, I went to check out the price. Each of these cost $7+.

Tiramisu...

Personally, I didn't like it for 2 reasons. First, the mascarpone cheese is too much but I have to say that the light texture is pretty refreshing. Second, the alcohol content is barely there, thus to compare with the previous rounds of tiramisu I have tried, this definitely didn't leave a deep impression.

Although it is not sweet and the overall taste is good, having tried so many Tiramisu, I can't deny that my expectation has heightened.

Yuan's comments

This is by far the "wettest" tiramisu which I have eaten so far. You can literally see the coffee liqueur at the base of the cup. Overall I would say the tiramisu is not bad, just the right amount of mascarpone cheese. I think what's lacking is the alcohol taste.

Devil-Misu from tcc

Decided to chill out after dinner. Ultimately, dinner is never complete without a dessert or two. Since I can't make up my mind between cakes and desserts, I guessed I will just stick to lovely creations and that is 2 desserts from their menu.

Devil-misu...

Now what is so devilish about this...
_______________________________________________________

Fen's comments

I don't understand why some people actually curse and swear so much over tcc's change of menu. tcc's tiramisu is still as good as before, if not better. In fact, be it the presentation, taste and service, it is worth some praises...

In fact, like I said this is better than the previous as the savoiardi sponges are thicker and thus the taste of the "cakes" and its alcohol can be tasted more distinctively. However, I prefer the one from aroma as I generally prefer a higher proportion of savoiardi sponges. Anyway, for more tiramisu recommendation, jus click on tiramisu under the "search by dessert type" dropdown bar or our tiramisu special.

Oh, what is so devillish about this? Its alcohol content...
_______________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

I totally agree with Fen. The Devil-Misu is an improved version of their previous tiramisu. The major improvement as pointed out by Fen is that the savoiardi sponge is thicker and you can feel the taste of the alcohol from the mascapone cheese more distinctively. What I particularly like about this creation are the grapes that are soaked with alcohol. Dip the grapes into the mascapone cheese and it taste heavenly. But be warned - this creation has an high alcohol content. On the whole I would say that this remains as the top few tiramisu which I have eaten.

Fen's comments

I led Yuan into the temptation of eating Tiramisu again. Anyway, I didn’t enjoy this as much as our highlighted favourite 4. Although the savoiardi is well-soaked with espresso and liquour but I thought the texture was pretty grainy and rough. In addition, I didn’t like the mascarpone cheese; it wasn’t the richy and creamy like tcc, da Paolo, Prego and Ricciotti nor light with a tint of freshness like BakerZin and Aroma. In short, I didn’t pass it even though Yuan felt that it deserved to be in our favourite 4.
____________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

This is the first tiramisu which i have eaten that is more to the sweet side. It has this layer of jelly (or syrup?) over the top which probably accounts for the sweetness. Light cheese taste and slightly stronger liquour taste. Overall I would say that it is one of the better Tiramisu I have tried.

No. 19 - Tiramisu from Da Paolo Dolci

The only Tiramisu mentioned in the 50 best cakes...

Listed at No. 19...
"The name means "pick me up" in Italian and this authentic version of the Italian favourite is made with punchy espresso and rich, creamy mascarpone cheese."

_____________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

Earlier this year in January, I got a chance to dine at Da Paolo at Rochester Park. It was a company lunch affair in which the menu was fixed to be able to cater to about 40-45 people. In fact, we took the entire 2nd level of the place and I don't deny the fact that I was excited about lunch since I seldom get to dine in such a lavish place.

Anyway, having the choice between the

Torta al Cioccolato (Flourless chocolate cake) and Tiramisu, how can I miss out the Italian signature dessert. Before I continue, some acknowledges to be done, this picture was obtained from one of the popular food blogs, sparklette.net

From vague impression, I didn't enjoy the dessert at all. First and foremost, this is what I call a haunting portion, too huge for one. Next, I always prefer a higher percentage of savoiardi with a desirable amount of moisture so that it is pleasant to enjoy every mouthful and of course, for easy-swallowing...

However, since Yuan is on his hunt for his favourite Tiramisu, how can we miss out this candidate that was mentioned in the 50 best cakes article. Thus, to ensure we eat the right one, we specially made a trip to the mentioned da paolo outlet, braving the rain and storm, we present you our comments for this baby...

Personally, I didn't like it as much as the one from Hotel Intercontinental, but I am starting to have my suspicion how an authentic Tiramisu should taste like. It seems like major Italian names such as Prego and Ricciotti have their Tiramisu presented in a rich and thick mascarpone cheese and negligible amount of liquor. Whatever the case, when it comes to eating, it is subjected to personal preference and in my personal point of view, I would prefer a greater portion of savoiardi and alcohol with a lighter mascarpone cheese.

Oh, before I sign off for the day, the difference between the Tiramisu from Dolci and Rochester Park is that the former has extra pieces of savoiardi at the side of the cake. However, as these form of cakes generally contain more flour than the average sponge cake, it is no doubt a little dense and springy. I find it nice since it neutralizes the taste of the rich mascarpone cheese but the one from Ritz Carlton is much better as it is crispy on the outside despite keeping it in the fridge overnight and the interior of the ladyfingers remains soft and light.
_____________________________________________________________

Yuan's comment
This is my 10th tiramisu which i ate this week and i am kind of sick of tiramisu. I am beginning to be a little mechanical when i assess tiramisu.

1) Texture. As pointed out before, the amount of cocoa powder can be an indication to its moisture content, thus this is drier and denser sort.

2) Presentation. Doesn't look like your typical tiramisu. You will notice that there is a layer of savoiardi around the tiramisu which is not soaked with any alcohol at all. This makes the tiramisu look unique but also drier. I generally prefer the moist feeling when it comes to tiramisu.

3) Proportion of mascarpone cheese and savioardi. As you can see it is virtually filled with mascarpone cheese. This outshines the coffee liquer element.

4) Alcohol is hardly present in this tiramisu.

Generally, I feel that readers should only make the trip if you are looking for something different but other than that, i think you can give this tiramisu a miss.

Tiramisu (Intercontinental Singapore)

This is one Tiramisu you will fall in love on your first bite but take note that this was made upon special request and is only available as a whole.

The cake looks like Mozart Tranche and it is so lovely on its presentation that you will think twice about pushing your fork through. According to wikipedia, the Italian name "Tiramisu", which most knows, is "pick me up" (Tirami su) but it can be translated figuratively as "cheer me up". Aroma's Tiramisu fits both description completely.

Layered beautifully with expresso-soaked savoiardi sponge cake with strong taste of liquor, the combination of mascarpone and whipped cream is just right, not too light nor heavy. Thus, when eating it as a whole, it simply hits your expectation, and viola, a smile on your face. I have no complains over this cake but simply full of praises.

I have to add that the Executive Pastry Chef is very friendly and is willing to customize your cake order. With such great service and attention, presenting their exquisite creations with wonderful taste, what's more can I say, do consider them as one of your choice when looking for a birthday cake.

As usual, Yuan's comments are as follows,
"This is by far the best tiramisu which i have eaten. Just purely on appearance, this tiramisu already won all the rest which i have tried. Particular i like the "chocolate well" which you see on the top layer. Basically it is a depression on the top layer filled with chocolate fudge. Furthermore, there is this mini tiramisu on top of the tiramisu and 2 layers of thin chocolate by the side. You will really hesitate to eat it as it is so lovely.

Moving on to taste. It is somewhat like Bakerzin but with higher alcohol content. Even the combination of mascarpone cheese and lady's finger sponge sponge cake is just right. Excellent texture and slightly moist. All these fulfills my criteria of an excellent tiramisu, both in appearance and taste. This is a must try. "

Tiramisu from Prego... *Sigh*

Yuan and I are on a Tiramisu spree and it has come to a point we are quite sick of it....

Entering the main entrance of Prego leads you to Prego Deli and this is part of the showcase of their cakes and pastries at the entrance of the restaurant. Actually, the cakes looks prettier from the aerial view but I didn't want to behave like a paparazzi.

Anyway, the pastries are at $4+ per slice and some of the whole cakes offered that day were Coffee opera, Mango mouse, New York Cheesecake. In fact, a 500gm of Mango Mousse cost about $22+. That is why I always tell my friends, it is actually better to order cakes from Hotels, the quality is good and usually cheaper than the boutiques.

Tiramisu... The aerial view of the Italian
Similar to my previous Prego entry, I have gotten this picture from street directory website.

As described in the menu, Prego's Tiramisu is served in the form of
"Coffee steeped ladyfinger biscuits layered with mascarpone cheese and bitter cocoa"
_______________________________________________________________
Fen's comments

Based on some of the entries in forums asking for the best Tiramisu in Singapore, Prego will be one of those that were mentioned. Of course, I do come across negative comments but being one of the prestigious hotels, I think I will prefer to give them the benefit of doubt.

Known to be one of the stars of Prego, this Tiramisu kind of disappoint. As some has pointed out, the sponge seems to be too dry which might be, as what some has claimed,
being left in the refrigerator for too long. I don't mind a lower alcohol content but I do feel that one of the factors that make a good Tiramisu is a good well-soaked sponge so as to complement the mascarpone cheese well. In addition, the mascarpone cheese is just too thick and sticky which doesn't tempt me to finish the entire dessert.

I would say, I don't mind dropping Prego for their main course but not for their Tiramisu...
_______________________________________________________________
Yuan's comments
We came to Prego with high expectations of their Tiramisu. However this was a disappointment. As someone pointed out, look at the cocoa powder on the top of the Tiramisu and you will be able to tell the degree of moistness. After having this Tiramisu, i sort of understood what it meant. Thick layer of cocoa powder on top and dry sponge. Further this Tiramisu has no alcohol content but a strong coffee taste. Based on dryness, i think its not as good as some claim.

Ricciotti's Tiramisu

"mascarpone cheese cake with ladyfinger biscuits, coffee and cocoa"

Yuan has been receiving recommendation of Tiramisu from all over Singapore and it is really a headache to decide where to go. We wanted to go back to Shangri-la yesterday for a slice of tiramisu and we were debating to go Da Paolo since it appears on the 50 best cakes article. In addition, Canele sounds tempting and with all the internet forums I have fished out... My head is not registering any more recommendation.

The same group of people that recommended tiramisu from tcc, suggested Ricciotti, a sister restaurant of Menotti. Alright, dinner and tiramisu at Ricciotti and so be it then...

Viola, this fits what I want. 50% proportion of finger sponge and mascarpone cheese, just like BakerZin. Some differences between the 2,
  • Ricciotti has a better presentation since it is round, no uneven edges.
  • The finger sponge from BakerZin has a slightly higher alcohol content
  • The mascarpone cheese of Ricciotti is very much richer and creamier than BakerZin

But what is the point of comparing when I enjoyed both equally much... Both has its goodness of their own... Anyway, each serving of tiramisu costs $7.80++.

___________________________________________________________________

Yuan's Comments

This tiramisu is one of the best when it comes to mascarpone cheese. The top layer gives you a slightly cheesy feeling rather than creamy. Further the portion of macarpone cheese and layer finger biscuit is just right thus you will not feel as though as you are having a cream cake. The finger biscuit is soft and has this light coffee taste. But alas, this tiramisu has no trace of alcohol. Thus I would still find the one from
tcc better, but maybe those that dislike tiramisu with alcohol will love this.

Tiramisu... are we that obessed?

Before our cake spree, BakerZin has always been our favourite for any cakes. Good selection with minimal disappointment. For a period of time, the Tiramisu has been my favourite and we considered this as the best. After eating Tiramisu from Rocky Pizza, the coffee connoisseur and GOBI. Does Yuan love the BakerZin's Tiramisu as much as before? Let's see...

Tiramisu

"An Italian cheesecake made from mascapone cheese. The finger sponge is soaked in an espresso syrup with brandy & white rum. The mousse is flavoured with masala wine."

____________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

Till now, I still like this Tiramisu as much as before. Why is that so? Simply because the mascapone cheese is light and not too much. In my opinion, I always like a slightly higher proportion of finger sponge over mascapone cheese. The main difference between BakerZin and tcc or GOBI is that there isn't much layering. In these way, the taste of the finger sponge will be more outstanding. When mascapone cheese is too creamy or tipped over 50%, the taste of tiramisu becomes more like a mousse, when the proportion between the 2 is about 50%, the initial taste will be the alcohol-flavoured finger sponge.

So when buying tiramisu, it is important to know one's preference? The alcohol content, the creamy mascapone cheese or the finger sponge... In that way, it is easier to make a choice since they all taste just as good.
____________________________________________________________

Yuan's Comments

I guess taste is always relative rather than objective. You can only say one cake is nice when you compare it with another. Having tried tcc's Tiramisu, Gobi's and Bakerzin again, I do have an 2nd opinion. What i liked about Bakerzin's Tiramisu is that the mascapone cheese is split into 2 layers with 2 layers of finger sponge. In this way, you will not have the impression that this tiramisu is too creamy. Thus you will taste the sponge and the mascapone cheese together. However i personally like the taste of rum. In this case, the rum smell in this tiramisu is the weakest when compared with tcc and Gobi. Thus i would generally prefer tcc and Gobi over Bakerzin.

Tiramisu... at GOBI

Earlier on, we mentioned about the miniature beauties of GOBI. Let's go BIG now...

In 2007, GOBI released a series of whole cakes but note that only the chocolate therapy is available on the shelf. The rest of the cakes require a pre-order. As for sliced cakes, they only have tiramisu, dark angel, strawberry shortcake and the opera.

In this entry, we present you the Tiramisu...

The Italian classic, light Italian mascarpone mousse sandwiches traditional genoise soaked in white rum, cognac and coffee syrup.

_______________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

Yuan is currently on his Tiramisu spree but I am neutral to it. The alcohol content is pretty strong but the mascarpone cheese like most tiramisu was overloaded. I am one that prefer more cake content.
_______________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

When i thought that TCC has the highest alcohol content, i came across Gobi. On my first bite, i thought that this tiramisu isn't that nice. Why? Because the layer of mascarpone cheese on the top layer was just too thick. So it gives you the impression that it is too creamy. However when i actually tasted the sponge. Wow. The sponge is really good and you really feel the rum taste and smell. I guess if you like the rum taste, you will like this tiramisu too.

Ti - Rum - Misu from tcc

This is one of the best Tiramisu which i have tried. I guess the main reason is because of the high alcohol content of this cake. Thus it is not so sweet and has the slightly bitter taste of rum.

When something is good, I guess I don't have to say much. If you happen to be there, try it. It's really good. The amount of savoiardi aka lady finger cookie and the mascarpone cream is of the right proportion. The savoiardi layers intercept the multiple layers of mascarpone cream giving it a good blend and thus you don't get a chunkful of mascarpone cream.

However, I realize nowadays I prefer chocolate mousse than tiramisu. If this blog was created 1 year ago, I can easily give you the top 4 preference immediately. Now, my memory is failing me... hai...

From vague impression, Hilton's was so-so, BakerZin was one of the best, Shangri-la (the Line) was yummy, Obolo's tasted like kueh lapis and.... Argghhh... can't remember, maybe when I drop by again, I will take picture and blog it, meanwhile... stick to these comments or rather drop me some recommendations :D

P.S. I just recalled, how can I forget the gigantic tiramisu from Modesto. That was a Valentime treat from my dearie for this year... Will post the picture when I am home. Me and the gigantic tiramisu. It's nice (but with a thicker amount of mascarpone, lesser cake) but just too much for 2 foodies that were overloaded with pizzas...
