Simply Chocolate by Victoria

I can’t recall how I come across Decadence Cakes but since it is still in my browsing history, I have decided to order Simply Chocolate and ChocoNanas. That was the aftermath of eating the Banana Choco Fudge from choc.a.bloc with my colleagues and I couldn’t resist the temptation of a chocolate cake.

If you are wondering where the shop is, this is another home baker located at Holland Drive and as usual, I have requested reduced sugar in both cakes.

Victoria was very helpful and was prompt in replying. Knowing that I am concerned about the overall sweetness of the cake, she suggested Blackforest or Strawberry and Mango Cream. Moreover, ChocoNanas is a mousse cake which cannot be kept too long without refrigeration.

Through the phone call, she realized I was sharing with 2 other people and how sweet was she to divide, decorate and pack them individually. The service is superb.

Simply Chocolate is described as happiness can be found in the simple thing; take a bite into her signature light chocolate chiffon cake, coated with fine unadulterated dark chocolate ganache. Ecstatic!

and is sold at $35 (1kg), $45 (1½kg) and $55 (2 kg).

I really love this chocolate cake. The chocolate sponge is so soft and the fudge complements it wonderfully. Although this is slightly different from chocolate fudge cake due to its lighter (of course, less moist) texture and chocolate buttercream is used instead, this is definitely an alternative to chocolate fudge cake, particularly if one doesn’t want to travel to Bedok or Jalan Kayu.

The cake is so fresh that a short while out from the chiller will make the cake wobbly, thus explaining the lack of photos for this cake. The dark chocolate ganache is no doubt smooth and rich that gives the “oomph” factor.

Believe it or not, if not for me attempting to save the final 2 pieces for my family, this one-third portion would have been gobbled up by Yuan and I during dinner. Highly recommended!!!

However, in all chocolate cakes, it still voice down to personal preference, my family prefers the Blackforest while my colleagues, including Yuan and myself, find this heavenly.

Yuan’s comments

I am really impressed by Victoria. Given this standard it is easily comparable with most cakes which we ate at expensive cafes. The cake is so good as the top layer tasted like melted chocolate and not chocolate cream. The chiffon is dense and has this strong chocolate smell. Maybe the only down side is that there is a layer of chocolate cream in between. I would have preferred it to use the same chocolate as what was coated on the surface. In general this is a must try for all those who love chocolate fudge cakes.

Blackforest by Decadence Cakes

As mentioned in my previous post, BlackForest, an alcoholic cake, was supposed to replace my choice for ChocoNanas. As described on her website, Blackforest is a white beauty and don't be fooled by the serenity of this cake, the fresh whipped cream masquerades a rush that comes from the "cake-full" of brandied cherries and kirsch soaked chocolate sponge. Feel the love!

Sold at $45 for a 8” cake and $55 for a 9” cake.

I didn’t like this as much as Simply chocolate as I thought the amount of cream was just too much. However, when my family ate this at home, it was chilled and thus was not as marshy as what I had in the afternoon.

It seems like my family likes this more than Simply chocolate and for those who like cakes from Secret Recipe, this is recommended. Victoria is very generous with her cherries and the alcoholic taste was just right. I personally thought it would be better if the chocolate sponge is thicker; her chocolate chiffon is simply addictive.

I just loved the rum and chocolate combination. When I smell the liqueur smell, I knew I would love this cake. I guess the only flaw I found in this black forest was it has too much fresh cream in the middle. (Refer to photo above) However if you leave the cake in the fridge and eat it the next day, it somehow tasted like ice cream cake. In general this Blackforest is one of the best which I have eaten. Maybe its just me and rum. :)

More on U.d.d.e.r.s

Brought my family to U.d.d.e.r.s after lunch and I am sure glad I have introduced them to this place. Having eaten at Ben and Jerry, Sheraton Towers High Tea buffet, Mingles for ice-cream and waffle, I thought this is the best among the 4, particularly if you like springy and thick waffles with a not-too-sweet ice-cream.

Surprisingly, despite the heat and thus making the shop alittle stuffy, this place does attract a fair share of people on a Deepavali afternoon.

Ordered the Mao Shan Wang (King of Cat Mountain durian) durian ice-cream and apparently, this is considered a better grade than D24, thereby explains a slightly more expensive price. Each scoop of D24 durian ice-cream (premium) costs $3.90 while the Mao Shan Wang ice-cream (connoisseur) costs $5.30. I got my sister to try both back to back and she picked Mao Shan Wang for my grandfather. For more explaination of durians, ieatishootipost has a good coverage of the various types of durians.

Their description for these 2 durian selection,

D24 Durian
Fresh succulent D24
Fresh D24 durian flesh, mushy blobs of it, churned into ice cream.
Need we say more? Pure bliss!

Mao Shan Wang Durian
King of Cat Mountain durian
This is the king of the king of fruits.
Bitter, sweet, pungent, fragrant, complex flavours intertwined into an explosion of durianism.

Apart from the Mao Shan Wang, the strawberry ice-cream receives lots of praises from daddy and grandpa. They can feel the fresh strawberries and “thumbs ups”. This is definitely high recommended…

Strawberry Fields
Only real fresh strawberries
Using only fresh strawberries (feel the texture of the millions of strawberry pits in the ice cream!), this sunny flavour is totally sweet and wholesome.
Guaranteed to please
.

Xiang was too ambitious to try their Rum and Rasin, the alcoholic content (3 scoops of Rum & Rasin = 1 can of beer) was too strong for her to handle but she enjoyed the Mango sorbet that she practically licked the bowl clean.

Fresh Mango Sorbet
Only fresh mangoes!!!
Very light and refreshing.
Fresh mango reinterpreted into an oh-so-smooth sorbet.
Udderly healthy and good for you

Lastly, I have the vanilla ice-cream with waffle. Need me to say more?

Vanilla Beanz
Pure vanilla beans
Made only from natural vanilla pods (yes, only the real thing! No essence, extract or artificial flavouring).
We slice the vanilla pods by hand and painstakingly extract the tiny vanilla beans within to make our deliciously fresh, dreamy, creamy Vanilla.
Definitely a must-try for Vanilla purists!

This is a place for good and reasonably priced ice-cream. The texture is oh-so-smooth and the flavours offered by them are of a wide variety and strong due to their generous usage of ingredients. Not too sweet and thus will be liked by most.

Do check out their Slightly Sea Salted Caramel ice-cream for those who fancy salted caramel. It is their nice flavour.

Waffle from Mingles

Located at Novena Square, this place adopts an open seating concept with cheerful orange seats and the display of colourful ice-cream. This place sure appeals to small families for rosti and sausages.

I have been here once with my grandparents and another with Yuan for a quick meal. Generally the food are reasonably priced.

Decided to drop by for waffles and ice-cream and thus we settled with their Crispin’s Waffle ($10.90 excluding 7% GST + 10% service charge). Since this is fixed in the menu, we have to make do with 2 scoops of ice-cream but the flavours can be changed. Originally, this freshly baked waffle is served with Chocolate Ecstasy and Macademia Supreme ice-cream and topped with chocolate fudge and strawberry but we changed the Chocolate Ecstasy to Rum and Rasin.

Fen's comments

I am sure there is a group of people that fancy New Zealand ice-cream but sad to say, I don't belong to the category. No doubt the ice-cream is smooth but I thought the flavours were alittle ordinary. The Macademia Supreme lacks the nice vanilla fragrance which I fancy from Hagan Dazs while I am generally not a Rum and Rasin fan so I won't usually pay attention to this flavour.

Maybe because my taste buds have been picky after eating several ice-cream back to back but I sure prefer the ice-cream from
Ben and Jerry's which I have eaten 2 days ago.

The waffle is alittle dry though the thickness is just right for me. Comparing this with
Gelare and Udders, I thought it might be a disappointment as it generally lacks the fragrance and texture. Just my personal perspective.

------------------------------- Non-waffle review -------------------------------
Frankly speaking, when Yuan has first started the blog, I was pretty keen to compile all the nice goodies we have been eating and in a way, this blog has become a catalyst to make us venture for more desserts.

However, as it goes, I am feeling more and more demoralized due to the expectation to take good pictures, the fear of causing disturbance to other diners or even to be told off by the staff in the restaurants, of course I start to feel the stress to find new places.

Anyway, these thoughts were stirred when the manager of Mingles was clearly not happy when I am taking the picture of the shop and even though he has not told us off, as I sit down and think about these 4 months, I felt that my enthusiasm has been dampened and I am having second thoughts to continue this blog. I am sure there are food bloggers that think this way and I wonder what are some of the factors that keep this going.

Yuan's comments

Personally I didn't quite enjoy this waffle. 2 factors. First, the ice cream has this coconut after taste. Second, the waffle is just crispy but lacks the aroma.

Weekend High Tea at The Dining Room

The waterfall, the high ceiling and the ample lighting through the glass panels make this a soothing place to laze around with a group of friends for a chat.

Starting from the left, the Cold Dyo station with Fruit Rojak + Condiments; the Savoury food section with Pandan Chicken, Seafood & Olive Fried Rice, Pyramid Indian Samosa with Mint Chutney and Mango Chutney, etc.

The reason for choosing a high tea buffet is for a wide array of dessert and for this Saturday, Sheraton Towers has Chocolate Fondue with Strawberry and Condiments, Banana Chocolate Éclairs, Baked Cheese Cake, Honey Madeline, Praline Crunches Chocolate Cake, Tropical Fruit Platter, Assorted Nonya Kueh & Indonesian Kueh lapis, a Waffle station with condiments, Refreshing Jelly with Aloe Vera, Longan, Durian Pengat, Rasin Scones, Bread & Butter (Apple & Pear) and Bubur Cha Cha.

Some of the dishes at a closer angle... Starting from the top left, Laksa with quail egg & prawn, Boutique Style open face sandwiches & assorted sandwiches, Vietnamese Rice Paper Roll with Roasted Duck and some food from the hot savoury station.

Note: There is a slight difference between the high tea for Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, Sheraton Towers’ famous Laksa and the Durian Pengat, a hand-made fresh mousse with palm sugar and fresh durian pulp will be served. As for Sunday, international spread which includes a selection of sashimi, prime rib of beef or crispy roast duck and apple strudel with vanilla cream sauce will be presented instead.

Weekend High Tea starts at 12pm to 4pm with the following pricing,
Saturday - $29.80 ++ (Adult), $15.00 (child)
Sunday - $32.80 ++ (Adult), $17.00 (child)
15% discount for Citibank, HSBC, DBS and AMEX
For UOB cards, the 7th person dines free with every 6 paying adults.

Fen's comments

Frankly speaking, I have emailed several hotels before I decided on Sheraton Towers. My eventual dilemma was between Hilton and Sheraton Towers for the former having the widest variety and the latter being the cheapest among my enquiries.

I really love the ambience of this place. There is no pressure to stay through the entire 4 hours block and the waterfall against the glass panel is really an eye-relaxing sight. As for the limited variety, I kinda expected it since I had their menu before hand.

Frankly speaking, I do like the selection, it is not excessive and thus one is able to try all dishes. Moreover, some of the dishes are pretty nice, namely the laksa, the chocolate praline cake, the bread pudding, pandan chicken and olive fried rice. I would say this is a pretty affordable buffet for a weekend gathering and wouldn't mind to drop by to try their durian cake.

The deciding factor of why I have chosen Sheraton Towers over Hilton was because of Camemberu's entry on her visit to Sheraton Towers.
____________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

If you are looking for variety and spread you are going to be disappointed. As the name implies, this is a high tea. A place whereby you laze around for the whole afternoon, sipping tea and enjoying the snacks. Hence do not expect lobster, prawns oysters etc. Instead expect snacks such as samosa, popiah and fried carrot cake.

There are 2 items which I would point out in this buffet that is a must try.

First is the pandan chicken. Very tender chicken marinated with satay sauce and wrap in pandan leaves - delicious.

Second is the chocolate hazelnut mousse. I must say this is one of the better chocolate mousse available, not too rich and has a nice thin layer of hazelnut praline. I must say that with this cake I am tempted to drop by sheraton towers to try their cakes.

Ben & Jerry's

From their menu of Specialty Sundaes, we have chosen the double Belgian waffle ($13.30) with Cookie Dough and Chocolate Therapy since I was craving for U.d.d.e.r.s’ waffle.

Ever since they opened, Ben and Jerry has appealed to Yuan due to its the huge chunks of goodies in their ice-cream. We used to frequent the branch at The Cathay due to its spacious sitting area but I am not sure if they still have live bands performance on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Anyway, I stopped patronizing Ben and Jerry's ever since they removed Dublin Mudslide and I thought the ice-cream was a little too sweet as I get older.
___________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

I kinda of regret choosing Ben & Jerry's over U.d.d.e.r.s as I was trying to curb my cravings for waffles. However, I don't deny the fact that Ben & Jerry's ice-cream still tastes just as good as before, particularly the additional chunkiness of fruits, nuts, cookies (ultimately that is the uniqueness of Ben and Jerry's ice-cream). But they are generally on the sweeter side so those who are cautious with calorie intake, each serving is around 270 cal.

As for the waffle, it is soft and the dough is not too bad. I would say it is pretty mild and not as yummy as Gelare nor as cakey as U.d.d.e.r.s .
___________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

Ben and Jerry has this cheerful atmosphere and will certainly cheer you up when you are down. I ordered the waffle as I was considering doing a waffle special and how can we miss out on Ben and Jerry's.

Essentially if you are a waffle fan, you would probably be slightly disappointed. The texture is kind of soft and lack the aroma. However this flaw is kind of compensated by the excellent ice cream served at Ben and Jerry's. Their ice cream is famous for its chunkiness and creaminess. At $13.30, this waffle is kind of steep. Generally I would say its worth a try if you are bored of eating their ice cream in cones or cups.

Tiramisu from Prego

Earlier on during the Tiramisu spree, we specially made a trip to Prego to try their Tiramisu and was pretty disappointed due to the dry savoiardi sponges. In addition, the mascarpone cheese was so thick and sticky. Thus, when my colleague's sister bought 3 pastries from Prego and of which one of them is a Tiramisu, I was indeed disappointed.

BUT it wasn't the case, the mascarpone cheese is light and the savoiardi sponges was well-soaked in espresso and liquor. One word to describe this, Yummy!!! I thought it was something similar to twelve + one but with a stronger alcohol taste.

By the way, I went to check out the price. Each of these cost $7+.

Chocolate Fruit Tart from Prego

This was the second favourite after the Tiramisu. Since I have tried a fair bit of chocolate these days, my expectation tentatively increases. This is basically a dark chocolate tartlet with custard cream, vanila sponge and different fruits topped on it. I would say there is nothing special about it but is pretty light and small.

Each of this costs $4.50+.

Cheesecake? also from Prego

I thought this looks the yummiest among the 3 since I had bad experience with Prego's tiramisu. It turned out that this is the most disappointing. It has a texture of a cheesecake but was soaked in some fruity syrup. So in a way, this is an extremely moist cheesecake and due to its high moisture content, it lacks the cheesy and rich texture.

Similarly to the fruit tart, it costs $4.50+.

Max Brenner's chocolate fondue

Melted chocolate fondue of dark and milk chocolate, served with banana bread, strawberries, sliced bananas and marshmallows from Max Brenner. The small one which comes with milk and dark chocolate costs $20 (excluding 7% GST and 10% service charge) while a large one will have an additional milk chocolate.

___________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

I always find that the chocolate fondue from Hagan Daz is far too expensive and this is way better than the former in terms of the amount of chocolate served and the smoothness of the chocolate. The milk chocolate has a lower viscosity than the dark, thus I would prefer the dark chocolate. However, over-consumption of the dark chocolate can cause slight irritation to the throat as it is very heaty thus drank a fair bit of water to flush the heat. For $20++, I think it is worth a try and the serving is defintely enough for two.
__________________________________________________________________

Yuan's Comments
This is by far the best chocolate fondue which I have tried. The small fondue comes with milk and dark chocolate. I preferred the dark chocolate over the milk chocolate. Why? As you dip into the dark chocolate you will find a perfect coat of chocolate. In the case of the milk chocolate, it is not very viscous and flow down.

Suckao...

Suckao is the espresso of the chocolate drinks of Max Brenner, which is basically a small, dense, concentrated shot of rich chocolate ($6.90 excluding 7% GST and 10% service charge).

The term "Suckao" is made up of two words that describe the utensil and the unique drink, containing
Suck - to draw the dense lique through the metal tube.
Kakao - the Spanish word for cocoa beans from which this rich chocolate drink is made and which determine its quality.

Interesting name, for a moment I thought the inspriation was gotten from Hokkien (one of the Chinese dialect).
___________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

Having tried plenty chocolate drinks, I can't help but to say my favourite is Max Brenner's. The beauty of Max Brenner's is the use of milk thereby having a creamy but yet rich chocolate taste. Since I like the concept of controlling the proportion of milk and chocolate, I was pretty surprised about Suckao of Max Brenner's.

We attempt drinking the melted chocolate without milk and the rich chocolate instantly send our hormones rocket high. The velvety smooth chocolate is simply addictive but that was simply too heaty. After mixing the milk, we couldn't resist slurping the chocolate down since it tasted heavenly when it is hot (Yes, the little fondue-like cup can be hot after some time).

__________________________________________________________________

Yuan's Comments
I believed I mentioned before, the best chocolate drinks are usually the ones which allows you to dictate how much chocolate and milk content. For the suckao, you choose how much chocolate you want to add and then pour in the milk. For me, I added all the chocolate and sipped. This drink is simply addictive and will make you crave for more.

Macha Roll Cake from Pâtisserie Dessert Couture

As mentioned in my previous entry, I simply cannot resist Evan's photos of her desserts and apart from her macarons, I have also ordered a macha roll cake from her. Based on the description of her website, this is a delicate macha sponge cake roll filled with either the choice of macha creme chantilly (sweetened whipped cream) or buttercream.

Aren't those little gumpaste flowers lovely. The colour of her macha roll cake is of such a lovely green and the chantilly cream just provides the contrast, making it so fresh and delicious.
___________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

It is always hard to find a good matcha cake as the balance between sweetness and the after-taste of green tea is difficult to achieve. Some are strong with the after-tea taste while others are mild and blended with chocolate, sweet potato, etc. I personally prefer green tea on its own and I thought even Azuki (Red bean) will overshadow green tea.

So far, I have only came across 3 green tea creations that is topped with whipped cream and that is the Matcha Chiffon from Tampopo Deli, Matcha Cotton from Ochacha and Evan's Macha Roll cake and I can dare say these 3 remains my favourite. Tampopo's Matcha Chiffon has the strongest green tea after-taste and due to its high green tea content, it has a slightly dense and wetter texture than the other 2. Ochacha's Matcha Cotton, on the other hand, is much milder and lighter in its texture... Evan's Macha Roll Cake happens to fall in between the two.

The beauty about Evan's creations is that it is home-baked and thus generally not sweet. I didn't regret my choice of buying macarons and macha roll cake from her as I was indeed craving for more. The simplicity of her macha roll cake is so lovely at sight and the soft and springy cake sponge with a slight after-taste of macha is simply addictive. However, I do find it alittle steep as it costs $8 per roll (8" in length) but do keep in mind that it is hand-baked and thus deserve a higher price than the bakes in confectionaries such as Bengawan Solo and Prima Deli. The same logic goes to Chinese New Year goodies when people are willing to pay 3 times more for home-bakes.

Yuan's comments

This is a very light chiffon cake with a tint of matcha smell. It is not too bad on its own however I found the cream in the center too thick.

Macarons from Pâtisserie Dessert Couture

I chanced upon Evan's kitchen ramblings from LadyIronChef's blog and I really adored the modern feel of her blog. At that time of my visit, I came across her entry on her new creations. Like all others, I cannot resist the delightful colours of her desserts and thus tempted me to make a purchase from her. Moreover, Sihan highly recommend her pistachio macarons, how can I miss this all together.

As the minimum order is 20 pieces with any of the 3 flavours, I have chosen matcha, lychee rose & pistache at a price of $35 nett.

___________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

Frankly speaking, I have never ordered food from blogs before and I have always admired these home bakers for your patience and resourcefulness to be able to sell their bakes. When I collect my order from Evan, I liked the way she has packaged the macarons, the little ribbon with her tag and the colourful macarons indicate that every tiny detail is her hard work.

I was even impressed that she managed to generate successful batches of macarons after her 2nd attempt. I know I can never do that. Self-learning is never easy.

The macarons are lovely made and I would say it is one of the prettiest I have seen. Each of the macarons has different shades of colour tones, make it so tempting. The macaron shells are chewy with a crispy outer layer, just to my liking and the best thing is that it is not sweet. Her macarons are pretty light that I think I have at least eaten 10 macarons. Her macarons taste better when chilled as the filling used is light buttercream.
___________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments
As Evan herself said: "Amande's macarons are similar to my macarons." Readers who have tried the macarons from Amande would find close resemblance in the texture of the shells. Crispy and slightly chewy. I guess the downside is probably the cream, it sort of lack the fragrance.
