Chocolate Tart with Gianduja Hazelnut Ice Cream

Chocolate Tart with Gianduja Hazelnut Ice Cream

Guess the chocolate tart from Jewels is stirring more attention and I guessed most would be tempted to compare with Laurent's chocolate tart.

Frankly speaking, both tarts are very different, while Laurent presents his tart with a crispy hazelnut base, dark and milk chocolate cream, Jewels is closer to the Caraibe of Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie. The chocolate filling adopted by Jewels is closer to a huge slice of chocolate truffle that melts cleanly in your mouth. As for Laurent, it is the creaminess of the dark and milk chocolate filling with the crunch of the hazelnut praline that strikes the right chord for most.

Depending on individual preference, Yuan, being a fan of Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie's Caraibe would prefer the chocolate tart from Jewels. As for me, I am more inclined towards Laurent's chocolate tart.

In this dessert, it was the Gianduja Hazelnut Ice Cream that screams attention. As what Yuan describes, it is very close to eating Praline Feuilletine minus the crunch.

Triple Chocolate Tart

Triple Chocolate Tart

Combination of Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate and chocolate biscuit base. Overall this is quite a good deal for $6 however I am personally a "pure-ist". I think the combined taste of the 3 types of chocolate fail to satisfy my chocolate craving. Further the overall texture of the chocolate was very sticky and the white chocolate kind of tasted like cheese.

Fen felt that dark chocolate should not have been so sweet and hence she found it disappointing.

Chocolate Praline Tart by The Dining Room

Chocolate Praline Tart

Chocoholics will prefer this over a conventional chocolate tart. Instead of a buttery tart base, Sheraton Towers replaces it with a chocolate boat. Hence apart from the raspberry and praline, everything else is chocolate.

Within the boat is smooth and rich chocolate mousse with thin layers of sponge and praline. Over the top you have crunchy chocolate balls with chocolate fudge topped over it.

Personally, this is really all that a chocolate lover could ask for, everything chocolate within one tart.

Just in case you are thinking of purchasing a whole cake from Sheraton Towers for a special occassion, the hotel's signature is the chocolate praline cake. Based on our experience with this tart, we can understand why it is popular among Sheraton Towers' dining guests.

For cheesecake, Sheraton Towers has the options of Strawberry, Baileys (this month special), Oreo and Mocca in a whole cake. Lastly, a whole Tiramisu cake order requires 4-days in advance.

Chocolate Banana Tart

Chocolate Banana Tart

Rich, silky duo layers of dark and milk chocolate over sliced bananas surrounded by crumbles. I liked the concept of using sliced bananas for at least you would be able to distinguish the banana from the chocolate. Other chocolate banana combinations which we tried used banana paste. Everything was perfect except for the tart pastry, it was simply too oily and similar to a curry puff skin.

Each tart costs $6.00+.

Note that there is a 50% discount for pastries and sliced cakes (except for durian goodies) from 8pm to 9pm daily.

Chocolate Berry Lust

Another famous creation of 1 Caramel, this tart is made up of luscious layers of Valrhona chocolate ganache with fresh exotic wild berries laden on a bed of pure crunchy hazelnut mix and is sold at $8.90++ per slice or $85++ as a whole.

Chocolate Berry Lust

For the next few entries, we will be bringing in desserts from a newly opened dessert pâtisserie, 1 Caramel. For classification purposes, these cakes will be published as separate entries over the next few days.

For those who had visited 1 Caramel, one will not miss out on their Chocolate Berry Lust. This chocolate tart topped with a medley of berries presents a wow factor when the smooth chocolate ganache melts in the mouth. Eating this tart with the generous toppings of berries resemble a chocolate fondue indulgence.

Apart from the dark chocolate ganache, the layer of hazelnut praline gives the tart an extra crunch. However, the tart pastry is kinda of disappointing with a slight burnt taste.

In any case, this definitely impresses in my opinion. I would consider this as a worthy alternative to my favourite, Laurent Bernard Chocolatier's chocolate tart.

Chocolate tart from Le Grenier

Chocoholics will be disappointed with this tart. Unlike the chocolate tarts (i.e. Prive, 2am, Laurent, 12+1 and Patisserie Dessert Couture), this tart barely contains chocolate.

Chocolate tart ($4.90)
Chocolate tart

We wouldn’t say this is bad, but rather it is a unique combination of hazelnut cream, a thin layer of milk chocolate, a cheesy curd-like mousse on a soft pastry base. We personally thought that locals may not be accustomed to such a combination.

Choc raspberry tartlets from Pâtisserie Dessert Couture

I couldn't resist my urge to try all Evan's desserts since I have been frequently her blog. Also, when I heard her talking with Sihan about the different type of chocolates and the existence of real estate chocolates, I have decided to lay my hands on her choc raspberry tartlets.

These are mini tartlets filled with Valrhona 55% equatorial dark chocolate ganache and topped with fresh raspberries, don't they sound tempting?

Evan should really consider baby shower packages and corporate gifts, her packaging is always so lovely. Anyway, back to the tartlets, each has a whole raspberry (pretty generous, I would say) but I thought it would be better to replace it with nuts as the raspberries are pretty sour and dry. In addition, I thought it will be better with some glaze on the raspberries to make it look better.

The tart shells retain its crunchiness despite having the chocolate ganache sitting in the shell for a while. Simply loves the smooth and bittersweet chocolate. With rich, smooth chocolate and a firm, non-soggy tart shells, I cannot stop popping it in my mouth. My family loves it and I wonder do I still have any to spare for my colleague.

However, they are pretty steep when compared to alternative options available in shops. That is the main problem when ingredients are expensive when bought at a small scale.

So envious of Evan's, I can never do it half as good as her. Her photo of these tartlets looks so irresistible. By the way, if you (of course, Evan) have decided to use these chocolate ganache in eclairs, let me know, I will be the first to buy it from you. I simply fall in love with the chocolate.

Chocolate Fruit Tart from Prego

This was the second favourite after the Tiramisu. Since I have tried a fair bit of chocolate these days, my expectation tentatively increases. This is basically a dark chocolate tartlet with custard cream, vanila sponge and different fruits topped on it. I would say there is nothing special about it but is pretty light and small.

Each of this costs $4.50+.

Chocolate Tart from Twelve + One

The best way to compare desserts is to eat is back to back and regular readers will know the reason why we have picked this from the array of desserts. The chocolate tart has 2 layers of chocolate, a dark chocolate fudge and a creamier milk chocolate mousse. Similar to the mignardises, the pastry of this is thin and crispy. I would say it is nice but I definitely prefer Laurent's chocolate tart for its higher chocolate richness and the hazelnut praline.

Yuan's comments

This attracted my attention as I wanted to try it back to back with the chocolate tart of Laurent.

Verdict?
I preferred Laurent's chocolate tart over this one.

Reason?
The chocolate tart here is simply too light. The pastry taste is actually stronger than that of the chocolate. Further I kind of like the layer of hazelnut praline in Laurent's chocolate tart.

Chocolate Tart from Laurent's Cafe & Chocolate Bar

Chocolate Tart ($7.80 w/o GST)

When I first mentioned about my visit to Laurent Benard, Kyn mentioned about their chocolate tart. Oh yeh, I didn't get that because it was too early in the morning and the tarts weren't available. Now, I finally get to eat it, 3 days after my first visit.

Chocolate Tart

This is Larent's most popular dessert, made of a crispy hazelnut base and dark chocolate cream. you can't go wrong with it.

Fen's comments

The moment Yuan took the first bite, he instantly knows why I was smiling and practically in seventh heaven. I am a fanatic of hazelnut praline and this was instantly my favourite. You will see it soon under my Hazelnut-chocolate mousse special.

The triple chocolate was not sweet and I love the rich and smooth chocolate. Just beneath the chocolate is the hazelnut praline. Yes, it is crunchy with the right amount of hazelnut taste and lastly, it has the almond tartlet pastry that is thin and crispy. With 3 extreme levels of texture and taste, one word to describe... "Heavenly..."

My goodness, just typing this entry, makes me crave for more...

Yuan's comments

Those who love hazelnut nut praline should give one a shot. Creamy milk chocolate with a thin layer of hazelnut praline and crispy crust. The proportion was simply just right. You will first taste the smoothness of the fine Laurent chocolate then you will feel the taste of hazelnut praline then the crunchy bit of the tart completes the chocolate indulgence. I guess the tart really makes the usual chocolate hazelnut praline better.

2am in the morning?

I am not sure when this opens but I am pretty sure that before this dessert bar comes along, it was previously a hairstyling salon. It was one afternoon in which I was walking to the bus stop that I saw the word, “dessert” which makes me wanna to explore this place.

The entrance is at the right hand corner if using this picture as a reference and a nice staircase leads you to a place which is completely different.

I simply fall in love with this place. The sofa seats are so widely extended that you just fill like cuddling those white cushions and couch in a corner, relaxing your mind. This is considered a luxury particularly after a day’s work.

This is more to a wine and beer place but they do have light main courses and desserts which allows you to chill out after work. I am so tempted to bring my female kakis along…

Alright, with a pretty abstract menu, we settle down with a tea, hot chocolate and a chocolate dessert…

Chocolate (S$14)
warm tart, wild nettle, salted caramel, blood orange sorbet

Fen's comments

Ahh, chocolate tart, a tart by definition is a pie without its top crust. This tart looks small but its chocolate taste is simply overwhelming. I love the light and soft top layer and beneath it is warm velvetly chocolate ganache oozing out. Not too sweet and it coats smoothly on my spoon, fork, servettes and mouth…

The crispy pastry case is of the right proportion and when eaten together with the chocolate, heavenly…

There are salted caramel and wild nettle sauce with cocoa powder and chcocolate bits which are crunchy and of course yummy. Nettle is a common name for between 30-45 species of flowering plants of the genus Urtica in the family Urticaceae. Anyway, the young Nettle is known to be a medical herb and it contains lots of vitamins, such as vitamin K and also anti-inflammatory properties. This provides the slight saltiness and sourish taste when eaten together with the chocolate tart.

The blood orange sorbet surprises me completely. I never fancy this as it is usually sour and icy but this one has only a slight tint of sourish and the texture is so fine and light. I gladly finish the entire sorbet up.

Although this place is alittle pricey but I won’t hesitate to drop by and try their other desserts. Maybe I should try pairing with their recommended drinks but sigh, if only they serve cocktails. Give me more reasons to come back.

Yuan's Comments

It seems like desserts that I try nowadays seem to be have chocolate ozing out - This is one of them. Generally its warm chocolate fudge within a tart coup with wild nettle, salted caramel, blood orange sorbet. Thus it is slightly sour. This is the flaw in this dessert. I personally feel that chocolate would be better sweet than to be slightly sour.
