No. 12 Lychee Martini Cake from Pine Garden's Cake

For people who frequent Ang Mo Kio, Pine Garden's will be one place where people will recommend their Blackforest. Well, it is ranked together with major names, such as Mezza9, Checkers Deli, Secret Recipe, Sweet Secrets and Balmoral Bakery, in the Sunday Times on September 5, 2004.

Ang Mo Kio Ave 10

Despite trying several cakes from Pine Garden's, I have never been to the shop since the cakes were bought back by daddy.

Apart from the Blackforest, Lychee Martini Cake was also mentioned in the Sunday Times, 50 Yummiest Cakes. The cakes available at Pine Garden's would stir childhood memories for its cake sponge and buttercream. Having ate so many mousse cakes, one will appreciate the simplicity of this combination and to be inspire by the cocktail, this is definitely something very unique.

Lychee Martini Cake I

Among the layers of vanilla sponge, the interlocking cream is flavoured with lychee and a slight tint of alchohol. Apart from that, bits of lychee provides the extra crunch and a refreshing after-taste. The best part is that a good slice of this only costs $2.40.

Lychee Martini Cake II

The combination of chocolate with orange zest is a safe one and in this case, the chocolate portion of this cake is surprisingly strong to complement the intense orange fragrance. The overall taste, though alittle sweet but is neutral enough to create a liking to the majority.

Orange Chocolate Cake

The only setback for the cakes at Pine Garden's is the powdery texture of its sponge but its winning factor is that buttercream used is not overly rich nor cloying.

Very good. I like.

And I might just go try the blackforest, without the need to travel to AMK.

Haha... Ang Mo Kio is not the most out-of-the-way place I have come across. With mrt and feeder service, not too bad bah... I thought Jalan Kayu was worse off...

Yea, Bengawan chiffon are pretty good too... just love the fragrance of pandan and coconut milk... Haven't found another place to second their kuehs...

oh... i love these kind of classic sponge cakes. But I'm not a fan of lychee though. haah. Sounds like a refreshing change from the usual richer cakes you usually sample!

lychee martini, my fav!! does it taste anything like it at all? similar to the lychee martini ice cream we had at seventh heaven?

Sihan: Yea, mousse cakes are pretty sinful but happen that my daddy is near the vinicity, so I asked him to pick up some cakes for me...

Evan: The fragrance of lychee martini (more to lychee) is more in its buttercream. Comparing with 7th heaven, this is definitely lighter...

pine's garden! this is how they look like. haha i heard about them, and sort of guess they are kind of neighbour-bakery type. very cheap! haha

Neighborhood bakery & "cheap" doesn't mean the cakes are lesser (not good). Some fancy-schmancy bakeries which call themselves pâtisseries can't ever deliver cakes that is even 1/2 the quality of neighborhood bakeries.

looks simple and yet deliciously affordable!

LIC: Wah, the way you word your comment may give people a wrong impression that you are stereotyping against neighbourhood bakeries...

Ice: Totally agreed, in fact the media has been featuring alot of these small establishments that has been producing wonderful bakes...

Big Boys Oven: Definitely, sometimes simple things taste the best... The only thing I didn't quite like is the slight powdery texture of the sponge...
