Room with a View

Carrot cake lovers will be curious about this place and before dropping by a visit, we heard strong recommendations from a fellow blogger and the one of the staff from Xin Flavours.

Room with a view

Room With A View, a rooftop cafe near Clarke Quay, is more than just a place for a slice of cake. Wanting to set up a platform for fellow photographers to showcase their works, Joanna and Keryl decide to make this place a cafe cum photo gallery. A different theme for every 3 weeks to get aspiring shutterbugs to submit soft copies of their photos and after careful selection, Joanna and Keryl will print and frame the best pics at their own cost.

IMG_7168A

In other words, the name of the cafe refers to the changing view of the photographs displayed in the cafe and one will be surprised that there is no windows in the cafe apart from a balcony at the other end of the cafe.

Simplicity is what the cafe adopts, clean white walls with photos aligned neatly along the narrow space of the cafe. Tables and chairs shaped in blocks provide clean lines. To inspire photographers, there is a quote from an American artist, Aaron Siskind, printed across the cafe's featured acrylic wall.

IMG_7196A

With complimentary Wi-Fi, this comfy place serves a nice selection of sandwiches, pizzas, quiche, cakes and pastries. But before we jumped straight into food, the beverages served are worth a mention. Apart from a range of Taylors' premium tea, coffee is said to be highly recommended. Iced coffee flavoured with vanilla powder adds a pleasant finishing fragrance while the Room Brewed Iced Tea is a refreshing escape from the hot weather of Singapore.

IMG_7182B

Grilled Panini is recommended by Keryl and the flavours available varies from day to day. Simple ingredients such as ham and cheese, makes the sandwich similar to a Hawaiian pizza as the sun-dried tomato chutney provides a nice tangy aftertaste.

Quiche

Quiche is another recommended main and the overall is relatively light, making me crave for a second piece.

IMG_7201B

Now for the main highlight, the cafe's signature carrot cake. Since all the baked goods are freshly made by Joanna's aunt, one can guess the niche of this place. Fresh and homely taste. The texture of the carrot cake (in our opinion) falls in between the popular Cedele's and Calendar's so it is moist with a certain degree of body. Moreover, the frosting has a slight tang with bits of apricot, which goes pretty well with the cake.

IMG_7199B

The light, lemon slice is another highly recommended pastry but would appeal to those who prefers sour desserts.

Lemon Tart

A newcomer for the afternoon, the key lime pie is our favourite among the 3 desserts for a special texture which falls between a tart and a cake. Right balance of sweet and sour.

IMG_7217A

Apart from the food served in the cafe, there is a small shelf of imported gourmet goods for sale.

IMG_7234A

Many thanks for Joanna and Keryl for the invitation to experience a laid-back afternoon in their cafe, not forgetting the complimentary meal and the wonderful conversation shared.

Carrot Cake from B Bakery

Those who have followed our carrot cake spree will know that we look out for 2 things in the carrot cake. First, its cream cheese frosting and second, the cinnamon content of the cake.

However, if one is following the conventional rule, this carrot cake is going to be a surprise. The cream cheese used in this carrot cake is flavoured with passionfruit and due to the strong and slight sourishness of passionfruit, it overshadows the mild-tasting, white cheese.

Carrot Cake

To make sure that the cakes have even edges, the chef chooses not to incorporate nuts and raisins in the cake but instead add grounded hazelnut to the cake. Since the passionfruit is rich in its flavour, the sweetness of the carrots fails to stand out despite the cake having a springy but not-so-moist texture.

I can't deny the fact that we were pretty put off by the passionfruit but judging from the popularity of their passionfruit cheesecake and that the carrot cakes were sold out by early afternoon, this is a love or hate situation.

Do note that there are many regulars that patronized B Bakery for their cakes and thus the unique taste of each cake actually suit the taste buds of the Caucasians that frequents this area.

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, a Los Angeles, California-based coffee chain, made their appearance in Singapore much earlier than other coffee outlets. The wooden furniture, the nice aroma of coffee and the smoothing music do remind me of my secondary school days and the initial few dates with Yuan. At that time, it was pretty expensive to have a cup of cuppa in such places and you wouldn't imagine the amount of pocket money I have spent on.

Coffee Bean, Wheelocks

However, at that point of time, as much as I love their coffee, I do dislike their cakes since they are kept frozen and have a grainy texture. The carrot cake ($5.50 per slice) I am going to introduce in this entry is no exception but instead the rough texture makes this the closest to the carrot cake in Cedele and we do find it nice after all.

Home-styled carrot cake

Taste do change after time, doesn't it? It is also true that I don't fancy their coffee as much as before and have gone to Starbucks for my caffeine fix. It is just a sad and realistic world out there.

Fen's comments

This cake shares a similar texture with Cedele but on the drier side. In other words, it is closer to a butter cake in which it crumbles slightly.

Cream cheese frosting is too sweet to our liking and thus makes Cedele’s carrot cake one of the best we have tried so far. As for the walnuts and raisins, it is not as generous as Calendar’s and Room for desserts but we are fine with it.
_________________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

This is the closest one to Cedele. It has strong cinnamon taste and not-so-crunchy walnut.

Gloria Jeans Coffee

Still pondering where can I get good carrot cakes without making out of the way trips to Macpherson (i.e. Blue Magnolia) and I chanced upon Gloria Jeans' display of cakes where I spotted my target.

Gloria Jeans Coffees, Cineleisure

I did have my fair share of good carrot cakes but to put them into my special 4 is not easy. During the Christmas season, I did come across 2 outlets (i.e. Haato, Liang Court and Brewerkz) selling carrot cakes but due to my intestinal problem, they didn't tempt me at all so I didn't get a chance to try nor blog it.

Another carrot cake

Since Gloria Jeans Coffees is within reach for us after my usual Saturday gym session, I have decided to drop by to try their carrot cake ($6.50 per slice) but alas....
_______________________________________________________________

Fen’s comments

This is what happens when you desperately look for a carrot cake to put in the 4th candidate in the monthly special. For one of the rare occasions, I am not keen to take more than 3 bites.

1st bite – Eh, let me re-confirm…
2nd bite – I don’t think I like this…
3rd bite – Yucks…

First, the texture is weird, like Yuan describes, it has an extremely moist and sticky texture like a Chinese Prosperity Cake, (发糕 aka Huat Kueh). Second, they minced the raisins in the cake mixture which has an artificial syrup after-taste. But, the saving grace was that their cream cheese was passable since the texture was alright and that the butter taste wasn’t overwhelming… Enough said.

Yuan’s comments

I only have one comment to make. It tastes so like “Huat Kway” (Those steamed cake that you use for Chinese prayers).

Carrot Cake from Dunkins' Donuts

Surprisingly, after roaming around shopping malls and hotels, it is pretty hard to find cakes in KL, apart from tonnes of Starbucks, Secret Recipes and occasional bakeries with a small selection of cakes. Thus, I am determined to have one slice before returning back to Singapore and since I am still searching for good carrot cakes, I guess I don't have much choice, do I?

Wonder why am I doing stupid things ever since I started blogging, have you heard of 2 jokers eating the same type of cake for close to 2 entire weeks, particularly when there is only enough room for 1 cake. Simply Unbelievable!!!

LIC is gonna whine at me for my poor pictures. I am trying to minimize my load and thus the dSLR will have to stay at home... Moreover, we need to rush for our bus and thus we take away this baby and ate it on the bus... Hopefully, it still looks tempting.
____________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

The cream cheese frosting has too much magarine content. YUCKS!!! Thus, this is the 2nd cake in which we scrapped away the frosting. However, when it comes to texture of the cake, it is soft with a slight grainy texture. Cinnamon strength is better than Calendar's and Room for dessert but the cake is a little too sweet to my liking. For RM6.00, it is not a bad deal but so far I have not found a second cake that can make me crave as much as Cedele's walnut carrot cake.
____________________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

Apart from the sweet and buttery layer on top of the carrot cake, this carrot cake is not too bad. Soft and have a slight starchy feeling with strong cinnamon smell. There is no walnut in this cake, just pure carrot with cinnamon.

Carrot Cake from Olio Dome

I have never been to Olio Dome before despite hearing them having good coffee. Anyway, was very thirsty and thus decided to try their cakes instead and for those who have been following the blog, our choice is clear...

Having ate several carrot cakes, I understand why some people are so addicted to them. Apart from chocolate cakes, carrot cake seems to be another that never goes out of style due to its simplicity of the ingredients used. It seems like a carrot cake with rich, soft and moist texture is easily achieved due to the addition of carrots and vegetable oil but whether it is fantastic depends on the spice used, the type and grade of toasted nuts used and its cream cheese frosting.

In this case, Olio Dome has their carrot cake served with walnuts, coconut and pineapple and topped with a rich layer of cream cheese frosting and shredded coconut. Each slice of Carrot Cake costs $5.90 and is subjected to 7% GST and 10% service charge. Citibank, UOB and OCBC credit cards are entitled a 10% discount.
_________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

Be it the frosting and the cake itself, this is definitely not as good as Cedele's Walnut carrot cake, Room for dessert's Summertime Carrot Cake and Calendar's carrot cake. The cake has a very dry exterior which gives me an impression that either it has been re-heated a couple of times or it has been kept in the fridge for quite some time. The cake itself is denser than any of the mentioned carrot cakes and generally has a coarser texture when compared to Room for dessert and Calendar. It is also sweeter when compared to all 3.

In terms of dried fruits and nuts, it is too finely chopped and not as generous as Cedele's and Calendar's.

The frosting is mixed with grated coconut and is extremely sweet that we skipped it all together. In short, it is not too bad if you are not picky with carrot cakes but once you have eaten better once, I guessed the choice is obvious.
_________________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments
Having eaten so many carrot cakes, it appears to me that to make a good layer of cream cheese is not that simple. Its either too sweet or too buttery. This one is no exception. It is too sweet with slight taste of cream cheese. Nonetheless I think the uniqueness of this carrot cake is the chewy burn sides of the cake. Apart from that, I think this is just another ordinary piece of carrot cake.

No. 2 Summertime Carrot Cake from Room for Dessert

Room for Dessert is one of the bakeries which I came across pretty often in internet forums last year but I didn't drop by until today since they closed pretty early.

Located at Waterloo Centre, this building comprises 4 levels of shops /offices and HDB residence blocks and was built in 1975. As for the bakery itself, it was started in December 2003 by a group of passionate bakers who pride themselves for using only fresh ingredients and thus great-tasting cakes.

This is the first time in which I couldn't resist not taking photos in a take-away outlet. The entire feel of this shop was pleasant, neatly decorated with ornaments and soft toys. However, I guess I was rude this afternoon for not asking for permission before snapping away and I am glad that the owner is kind enough to let me continue after I have made my intentions known. That did scare me alittle and I nearly wanted to delete the pictures on the spot.

Anyway, only their house favourites (Summertime Carrot Cake and Choc-A-Lot) are sold in slices and the other cakes and cupcakes requires pre-ordering. Depending on individual orders, it may require 1 day to 3 weeks in advance. Thus, it is better check with them if you are planning to get bakes from them for special occasions. Not to worry, they do reply emails pretty fast.

It is a pity that slices of Choc-A-Lot were sold out and I thought I was lucky to pick up their specialty. For your information, each slice of Summertime Carrot Cake costs $3.20 while whole cake are priced at $19 (500g) and $33 (/kg).

Oh before I forget, Summertime Carrot Cake is featured in the 50 yummiest cakes with the following description
"A classic carrot cake packed with raisins and walnuts and covered with a white chocolate and cream cheese frosting."
__________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

No doubt, this is delicious and fresh, generously filled with walnuts and raisins. I was told to allow the cake to equilibrate to room temperature for better taste and thus I ate it with my sister and mummy the moment I reached home. The cake is sufficiently moist and dense (not as grainy as Cedele's nor chewy as Calendar's) but the cream cheese frosting is little sweet to my liking. What is good about this cake is its strong fragrance of cinnamon in it.
__________________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

Having eaten the recommended carrot cakes, it gives me the impression that they all taste similar. The difference lay in how moist it is, the walnut, the cream cheese and the cinnamon taste. For Summertime Carrot Cake, I would say that it losses on the cream cheese and the lack of cinnamon taste. Apart from these factors, I think it is kind of similar to most other carrot cakes.

Carrot Cake from Food for Thought

Well, I am still on the hunt for a good carrot cake and so far, Cedele and Calendar's have leave quite a deep impression. I have read abit about Food for Thought and have passed by a couple of times on my way to the gym. Finally, got to pop in and check out Aunty Christina's Old School Carrot Cake.

This place does remind me of Pitstop Cafe and U.d.d.e.r.s where young entrepreneurs decided to bring in a new concept of chilling out but I was completely wrong. Apparently, this place was set up by 4 folks who (in my point of view) believe in social responsibility, or rather receiving and giving.

Welcome with smiles and greetings, this place provides a very light-hearted place to catch up with old friends or unwind after work. Though the place is alittle small, the warmth of the place does make me want to drop a second visit.

According to their website, they have set up a School of Thought which is a tuition centre in 2002, where they channel some of the profits to help underprivileged students. Food for Thought, being their second project, is to raise funds for international well-building projects.

Pretty surprised by their selection of main courses since their webbie only indicate that they serve sandwiches, soups and bakes. For your information, I was told that Mondays and Tuesdays are ladies night in which a main course will entitle a free dessert for ladies. I promise to drop by the Tuesday after next since I will be attending the PMS organized by Pitstop cafe next Tuesday.

By the way, they do not charge GST nor service charge and only accept nets or cash.

Fen's comments

Cedele has one of the best cream frosting and the most generous amount of walnuts but its texture is closer to a butter cake in which it crumbles slightly with a mild coarse after-taste.

Calendar's on the other hand, has a softer, more springyand moist texture. However, its cream cheese icing contains more butter and thus may be a minus point for cream cheese lovers.

Food for Thought happens to fall in the middle when it comes to its cake. It is not as moist as Calendar's and its texture is finer than Cedele. However, it is pretty dense, thereby will be the hardest among the three. As for its cream cheese frosting, it is more buttery and thus will be closer to Calendar's. In short, I would say this is not bad but having eaten these 3 carrot cakes within 2 weeks, the difference is pretty distinct.
________________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

This is a pretty dense and moist carrot cake. One of the most moist which I have eaten. However the cream cheese and walnuts were rather disappointing. As Fen pointed out, it was more buttery then cheesy. Also the walnuts were not crunchy. Overall not bad but I would prefer Cedele's carrot cake.

Carrot Cake from Calendar's

I first heard about Calendar's Carrot Cake from Jackson's message in the cbox and after Sihan responded to me via cbox that she is a fan of carrot cake and thus I have decided to order a 1-kg cake for sharing. Coincidentally, on the day when I email my enquiry to Calendar's, they were featured in Urban, The Straits Times on Oct 24, 2008.

Available in 1-kg and 2-kg, Calendar's carrot cake, are baked to a perfect degree of moistness, chocked full of freshly grated carrots, chopped walnuts, raisins, blended with just the right amount of spices, then lovingly covered with a layer of pure cream cheese icing devoid of fillers.

Since they are alittle out of the way, I asked about their delivery charges and it is $10 to central and west and $15 to $20 elsewhere.

As for pricing, it is $26 for 1kg and $52 for 2kg, till the end of November 2008 and due to festive periods, it will be $28 from 1st December but according to them, they allow customers to put in booking and pay first for regular cakes for Christmas at $26!

In case you ware wondering how the 2kg cake will look like, She Bakes & She Cooks happens to have an entry on her complimentary carrot cake.
__________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

I can't believe carrot cake can taste this good and ever since I have tried Cedele's carrot cake, I was antipating for Calendar's carrot cake. As what I have read from the internet, the addition of grated carrot makes the cake so soft and moist. In addition, the cream cheese icing when chilled gives such a refreshing taste.

What makes Calendar's different from Cedele's is that the former is springly and dense. The texture of Cedele's carrot cake is closer to butter cake, which is more porous and crumbles more easily. In addition, the scent of cinnamon in Cedele's is stronger with a more generous serving of walnuts.

I would say both are nice and definitely sends my carrot cake radar switched on. To lay a verdict on which is better, I can't but I would say that if texture is important, Calendar's would fair better. On the contuary, if you prefer spices and walnut, Cedele's is a clear-cut choice.

And reflected on my Carrot Cake's radar are...
From the 50 yummiest cakes,
Readers, do let me know if you have recommendation for carrot cake. I am on a carrot cake spree...
__________________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

Overall, I would say that this carrot cake is not bad. It has this dense and moist texture. As you bite you will feel chunks of walnut and rasins. However I prefer the Cedele's carrot cake better as I prefer carrot cakes with cinnamon.

No. 11 - Carrot Walnut Cake from Cedele

Yuan and I have never fancy the American-style carrot cake and so far the ones we have tried are pretty disappointing. Generally rough and hard texture, definitely a far fetch from our favourite chocolate fudge cakes... However, we are trying to convince ourselves to identify our favourite 4 carrot cakes and thus the best reference is the 50 yummiest cakes article where 3 are carrot cake.

Being the most convenient among the featured 3, we have decided to drop by Cedele for their best-selling carrot walnut cake. A slice of carrot walnut cake costs $6 nett and $7.80 for their cake set which comes with a drink.

As described by the 50 yummiest cakes, this is
"Cedele's best-selling carrot cake, finished with cream cheese frosting and untoasted walnuts.
Moist and lightly scented with cinnamon"

She Bakes & She Cooks has a better picture of this cake's cross section.
___________________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

Believe it or not, this is what I call "love at first bite". The cake is surprisingly light and soft. The best part is that it is not sweet and thus not cloying at all. The slightly sweetened cream cheese just compliments perfectly with the carrot sponge.

The overall texture is refreshing and a slice is definitely not enough for us. For the first time, we couldn't believe American carrot cake can taste this good. I am looking forward to Calender's carrot cake next week.
___________________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

I am not a fan of carrot cake but this one is really not bad. You can feel a layer of cream cheese and a faint cinnamon smell. As for the sponge, it is dense and moist which is unlike most carrot cakes. Overall, highly recommended.

Orange Carrot Cake from Swiss Baeckerei

Since we are planning for a carrot cake special for the month of November, we have decided to try these cute little muffin-like carrot cakes.

Sold at $8.90 per 6 pcs or $9.90 per loaf, there were only about 3 boxes of the former and 2 boxes of the latter at our time of visit (around 2pm).

Unlike most that are commonly glazed or topped with white icing or cream cheese icing and walnuts, Swiss Baeckerei has neither but flavoured with orange. In terms of texture, it is pretty similar to a muffin, dense and crumbly. However, the grated carrots is not as strong as the one we had at Dan Ryan.

Generally, the orange flavouring has overwhelmed the carrot and thus we felt that it may not appeal to the true carrot cake fan but nevertheless, it is something different and is worth a try if one doesn't mind the taste of orange in cakes.

Dan Ryans welcomes the bunnies

Each slice of carrot cake costs $9.50++ and is one gigantic cake. Be sure to share it with a friend. Personally i am not a fan of carrot cake but i tried it as it was an award winning cake. Generally i think it tasted like walnut cake and has coconut taste on the edge. I would think their muffin tasted better.

To me, carrot cake was nice at the first few bites, chunkiness of walnut and has a texture of a brownie (This is the first carrot cake I have tried so I am not sure is the cake suppose to have a similar texture to butter cake). And why do I say it taste like brownie, its texture is relatively similar to the carrot brownie from Secret Recipe. The only thing is that it is less oily and less sweet...

More salt in our blog...

Savoury radish cake (lobak ko, $14 for 1/2 which is 8 inch by 4 inch) which according to the article published in "A Classic Cake Guy", Business Times Weekend, 12 November 2005, came from his mother's recipe.

The description from the webbie,
"Made from a traditional family recipe, this smooth and savoury cake is bursting with flavour from bits of radish/yam, Chinese sausage and dried shrimp. Liberally topped with fried shallots, spring onions and sliced chilies, every bit packs a punch."

A closer look

I have also bought the pumpkin / yam combo for yuan ($7.50 for 1/4 which is 4 inch by 4 inch),
The description is as follows

"In this twist on a traditional Chinese favourite, we combine chunky yams and sweet golden pumpkins with Chinese sausage and dried shrimp to create a gastronomic adventure. Fried shallots, spring onions and chilli slices combine to ensure a delightful burst of flavour in every bite."

________________________________________________________

Fen's comments

The radish cake has a bitter after-taste, apart from that, the texture and amount of raddish is just right. Rich, smooth and salty enough. Well, I think I would prefer the raddish cake from Crystal Jade, at least it is sold in smaller portions, more convenient and I just love the taste of hei bi.

________________________________________________________

Yuan's comments

Pumpkin / Yam Combo: This yam cake just has all the right combinations. The pumpkin makes the overall cake soft. The chinese sausage adds a little sweetness to it. Overall i would say it is worth a try.
