B Bakery, an introduction

Retaining the design of Singapore's "first generation" shophouses, these two-storey buildings, with one or two windows on the upper floor facade, houses a variety of shops selling ethnic Arab goods such as Qurans, prayer mats, muslim apparel, carpets, wicker products and more. That was my impression gotten from my previous visit. This time round, having enter Arab Street via Beach Road, we noticed there are generally more eateries than shops, thereby attracting more foreigners and tourists.

B Bakery

B bakery is one place which offers sandwiches, western food, pastas and desserts thus is considered something different among the Muslim eateries and Turkish restaurants. I was surprised by its comfy interior seating area which is good for meeting up with friends.

Interior of B Bakery

Since the traffic along Bussorah Street is not very heavy, the outdoor dining area is pleasant for chit-chats and people watching.

Exterior of B Bakery

The owner of this place is a friendly lady and she is happy to cater to individual request. Despite only serving salads and sandwiches in the afternoon, she is kind enough to allow us to order from their dinner menu and get the chef to prepare for us. The service here is indeed warm, friendly and attentive.

Mains

Decided to try their pan-fried salmon ($18), which is served with shrimp butter, potatoes, vegetables en papillotes and their spaghetti aglio olio ($12.50 for lunch and $15 for dinner), served with mushrooms, asparagus and bacon. The salmon was nicely cooked with its meat moist and flaky. The sauce that comes with it has a zesty taste, making it light and appetizing.

The spaghetti aglio olio is sufficiently seasoned and salted with the pasta of the right texture and thickness.

Glass display of B Bakery's creations

Since this is a dessert blog, this array of creations are not escaping our clutches and we have decided to settle with 4 cakes. The 5th one was actually complementary from the owner as that is her favourite cake.

Cakes from B Bakery

Sticky date butterscotch is one of the more popular cakes available at B Bakery and the owner recommends if one likes the taste of Huat Kueh (also known as 發糕 or "Prosperity Cake"). Since the primary ingredients for butterscotch are brown sugar and butter, one can imagine the cake to be sticky and rich. However, despite all the positive comments, I am not a fan of such cakes, I just don't like the mashy, sticky texture. For those who likes the taste of dates, the butterscotch kinds of overshadows the natural sweetness of the dates.

Sticky Date Butterscotch ($3.50)

For the other cakes, I have to separate the entries for classification purposes so click on the links to read about their reviews,
Praline Mousse ($4.80)
Tiramisu ($4.80)
Raspberry Chocolate (Complementary)
Carrot Cake ($3.50)

I guessed this is one place which I don't mind visiting again. Since the prices are nett and that no service charge or GST is charged, I would say the food is priced reasonably. The owner prides herself for fresh ingredients and being a small eatery, the menu is pretty limited and that some of the dishes might not be available.

In short, I guessed this is a good place to have sandwiches and desserts with a few good friends for a good chat and chill-out.

Praline Mousse from B Bakery

B Bakery adopts a creamy chocolate mousse which goes very well with the coffee mousse found in the centre of the cake. At least, the balance of the two is right and that both flavours are evenly distributed across the tongue. The texture of the mousse is smooth and that it tasted like a light chocolate ice-cream which I thought was pretty similar to what Aroma offers.

As expected from the name, it has a thin layer of hazelnut praline at the bottom of the cake, providing an extra crunch to the overall texture. Though not the best but acceptable in my opinion.

Praline Mousse ($4.80)

This is definitely our favourite among the 5 cakes we had for that day and judging from the display of cakes available at B bakery, it seems like their specialty is chocolate mousse and that they have paired it with banana and espresso, raspberry or lemon. Also, their chocolate fudge cake is pretty popular but alas was sold out for that day.

Tiramisu from B Bakery

The owner prompted us to choose her tiramisu as this common creation might be easier to compare with the others we have tried so far. Indeed, this is one of the better tiramisu we have tried.

Tiramisu ($4.80)

Unlike rum which is commonly used in most tiramisu, B Bakery has theirs served with marsala wine which according to the owner, is what original Italian tiramisu are supposed to be. However, Yuan and I personally felt that masala is generally milder and lacks the punch when compared to rum.

After reading one of Ice's recent entries, I have started to pay more attention to the firmness of mascarpone cheese and this one seems to fit her description in which it is firm enough to hold the sponges. However, I personally prefer mascarpone cheese mixed with zabaglione custard or creme anglaise for a lighter touch.

Last thing to point out, the amount of cocoa powder sprinkled on the tiramisu was too much, hence providing a dry layer. We actually dusted the excess off and felt that it tasted better with lesser cocoa powder.

Raspberry Chocolate from B Bakery

This is the owner's favourite chocolate cake and she wanted to hear our opinion about this. The chocolate couverture and mousse used are similar to the ones found in the praline mousse but the difference lies in its accompanying flavour.
For praline mousse, the combination is coffee, hazelnut praline and chocolate mousse. As for this, it has interlocking layers of dark chocolate mousse and a small portion of raspberry compote.

Raspberry Chocolate

Often, Yuan and I don't fancy sourishness in chocolate but this actually caught us by surprise. The raspberry compote is not extremely sour and it goes very well with the smooth chocolate mousse. I would actually recommend this if people has a liking for sour desserts.

As for the pink cap, it is actually a raspberry meringue but we find it just plain sweet. Nothing special about that.

Carrot Cake from B Bakery

Those who have followed our carrot cake spree will know that we look out for 2 things in the carrot cake. First, its cream cheese frosting and second, the cinnamon content of the cake.

However, if one is following the conventional rule, this carrot cake is going to be a surprise. The cream cheese used in this carrot cake is flavoured with passionfruit and due to the strong and slight sourishness of passionfruit, it overshadows the mild-tasting, white cheese.

Carrot Cake

To make sure that the cakes have even edges, the chef chooses not to incorporate nuts and raisins in the cake but instead add grounded hazelnut to the cake. Since the passionfruit is rich in its flavour, the sweetness of the carrots fails to stand out despite the cake having a springy but not-so-moist texture.

I can't deny the fact that we were pretty put off by the passionfruit but judging from the popularity of their passionfruit cheesecake and that the carrot cakes were sold out by early afternoon, this is a love or hate situation.

Do note that there are many regulars that patronized B Bakery for their cakes and thus the unique taste of each cake actually suit the taste buds of the Caucasians that frequents this area.
