MetroCakes

On every special occasion, we always want the best for our loved ones and MetroCakes makes it easy by providing their customized service to make every occasion more memorable. Imagine, the joy of receiving a cake or miniatures when delivered right to your office or doorstep from your friends and loved ones. The element of surprise is bound to bring smiles.

The niche about MetroCakes is their comprehensive website to provide easy ordering. Moreover, they are extremely speedy in their delivery. For instance, orders placed before 11am can be delivered on the SAME day, between 6pm to 9pm while orders placed before 6pm can be delivered on the next day from 1pm to 5pm. The best part, MetroCakes offered FREE delivery for all orders of whole cakes or every order of miniatures above $40 so birthday celebrations can be done in a more convenient and affordable manner.

It may sound like a web business but MetroCakes has a nice shopfront, with the choice of whites and an open kitchen concept at 774 North Bridge Road.

MetroCakes

The selection offered is very extensive and we are very honoured to receive a box of MetroCakes'miniatures featuring all 16 different flavors for us to sample.

MetroCakes I

The packaging and presentation is lovely that we don't deny the fact that they do make ideal gifts and disposable cutlery are included within their packaging for convenience of consumption.

Yuan and I tried 4 selections from this eye-catching selection, namely

Triple Thrill, Tropic Party, Dark Knight
(From L to R), Triple Thrill, Tropic Party, Dark Knight

Triple Thrill is MetroCakes' version of blackforest. The creamy chocolate mousse does evoke my memories towards Sweet Secret. Not sure if you remember the good old days of Sweet Secret for their raisin scones and creamy mousse miniatures.

Tropic Party falls short in expectation, since my benchmark is Ritz Carlton's mango mousse. The bulk of it is light vanilla sponge with a nice tint of mango and whipped cream.

Dark Knight, rich belgium chocolate mousse with crushed hazelnut bits. The entire combination works like a nice chocolate truffle. Lovely.

Two to Tango, a mango cheesecake, generously topped with mango chunks will appeal to most, given its light and smooth texture.

OJ Rhapsody, Two to Tango, The Duke of Earl
(From L to R), OJ Rhapsody, Two to Tango, The Duke of Earl

As for the other 12, the cheesecakes' series caught my sister's attention and she finished the Oreo Cheesecake (Ebony and Ivory), Blueberry Cheesecake (Bluebells), NY Cheesecake (The New Yorker) and Strawberry Cheesecake (Lady in Red) in 2 consecutive mornings. According to her, the cheesecake are smooth but the base is alittle too moist to her liking. Overall, the flavours are quite mild and I guess her appetite says it all.

Strawberry Shortcake (Strawberry Sweetheart) will disappoint if one fancies the Japanese version (e.g. Tampopo or Patisserie Glace) as the cream used is slightly richer with a coarser sponge. Durian mousse (Kingpin) is ok but durian fanatics would prefer the rich version offered by Goodwood Park.

The remaining selections do appeal to my daddy, for he is someone who prefers his cakes to have more body. Moreover, the cakes remain soft and delicious despite being kept in the fridge for about 4 days.

After several birthday celebrations with my colleagues, I realize there is a handful of people who prefers cakes that are lighter on the palate with more cake content. In this case, I will recommend MetroCakes to this group of people, not only for the convenience but also for the quality this place has to offer.

Many thanks to Cerissa for the complimentary box of miniatures.

28. New York Cheesecake from Blue Magnolia

Cheesecake is a common candidate in most patisseries but one will be surprised how different it can taste.

NY Cheesecake

Described by ST to be made with premium cream cheese, the New York Cheesecake from Blue Magnolia is creamy, smooth and rich. In addition, the smooth surface and a good degree of moisture makes this cheesecake more outstanding than most.

Seasalt Caramel Cake

What I thought was more memorable was the Seasalt Caramel Cake. Salted caramel has always been a highlight in the context of pastry, probably due to the nice confusion created between sweetness and saltiness. Having being a sticky ingredient, most would have paired it with chocolate but Blue Magnolia does it even better with hazelnut feuilletine.

Blue Magnolia

Having ate the operas from The Line shop, this falls short on both texture and the strength of the coffee buttercream. The top layer of chocolate is just too overwhelming making it closer to a chocolate cake.

Chocolate fudge cake was not too bad but the major players would have deserved more attention for it having a sticky fudge and moist chocolate sponge.

Yuan described Blue Magnolia's Carrot cake to be closer to Barcook's Carrot cake due to a distinctive presence of cinnamon and the raisins. Cream cheese frosting is closer to icing since it lacks the tiny bit of saltiness.

For frangipane lovers, the raspberry almond cake and blueberry cake will leave a deeper impression, given its sweet and crumby texture with a hint of sourishness.

Petite desserts can be misleading, given its small proportion but having ate 8 tiny creations from Blue Magnolia, the overall impression tells us that this place deserved a second visit. Ultimately, there aren't many patisseries that sells bite-sized desserts (e.g. Gobi and Pat's Pastry) and this is the best among the 3. Be it taste and selection.

NY Cheesecake

As for cheesecakes, Hotel Hilton will remain on the top of my list.

Each petite dessert cost $2.20 and apparently there is a 50% discount after a certain timing for Fridays. I am not very sure about the details as the staff didn't disclose much so do call up if you have intention to catch the promotion. If I am not mistaken, a box of 9 is about $14.90.

Mix Cake by Pat and Felcor

Strawberry & Blueberry Slice

Mix Cake (5 slices of each @ $18.90)

Blueberry Slice & Strawberry Slice - The sponge are the same for these two apart from its filling (i.e. blueberry jam vs sliced strawberries + whipped cream). Pretty old-school taste and thumbs up to its soft chiffon.

Hazelnut Chocolate Truffle - See previous post

Dark Forest

Dark Forest - Pat and Felcor's version of blackforest, instead of coating the side with chocolate flakes, this one comes with chocolate coating for more flavour. Similarly to Four leaves , this is an in-between of the blackforest from neighbourhood bakeries (i.e. chocolate sponge with whipping cream) and the more expensive ones (i.e. kirish soaked cherries, chocolate mousse and chocolate sponge). The overall combination is pretty good, in fact better than Mezza9.

Chocolicious by Pat & Felcor

Eclairs & Tarts

Chocolicious (5 slices of each @ $18.90) and it contains the following,

Chocolate Eclair - For those who has followed our chocolate eclairs' reviews , we are not fans of this dessert due to the weak chocolate content. So, in a way, this didn't really stand out among the 4 and I would say the choux pastry lacks the fragrance, thus pretty similar to what one will get from neighbourhood bakeries. Moreover, this is one that has more choux pastry than chocolate cream.

Ganach Tart - Similar to what I feel towards Obolo's chocolate noir , it is tasty for its crunchy tartlet and smooth, bittersweet chocolate ganache.

Hazelnut Chocolate Truffle

Hazelnut Chocolate Truffle - Honestly, I am pretty surprised by the name of this cake, because the hazelnut was only negilible. It tasted like chocolate sponge cake with cocoa powder.

Chocolate brownies

Brownies - What differentiates from the usual chocolate brownies is the crunch which might be due to the addition of nuts. Unlike the dry and muffin-like texture, the presence of nuts seems to improve the texture.

Some miniature business inside GOBI

Gobi is one dessert bar in which you can grab petite and exquisite-looking desserts without the need to go for buffets.

These little petite babies are classified into 2 categories, namely Fantasy and Chocolate Factory and if you were to dine in, individual pieces costs $1.90. Tried a fair bit this afternoon and viola, here they are...

Presenting the miniature versions,

Dark Angel
Described as a must-have for all chocoholics, pure chocolate heaven embedded in moist rich chocolate cake, or in short Dark Angel has a solid core of chocolate wrapped in moist chocolately cake.
Cupid is a salty-sweet light cheese mousse and kirsch piped into hand-crafted white chocolate hats.

Also found at the back of their name cards, which I presume is their signature creation is the
Between the sheets...
Malibu milk chocolate ganache sandwiched between delicate sheets of dark chocolate and feullitine praline, sits on a meringue base.

Cactus
This creation sits on a cinnamon crunch, chestnut nestled in a cone of dark and light sponge curshed with dark chocolate ganache, custard and rum-soaked rasins, covered with milk chocolate and roasted diced almonds.

Fen's comments

The miniature desserts are really lovely which makes me hesitate to even disturb them with a fork. Nevertheless, food that are bought has to be eaten so...

The dark angel tasted like thick chocolate mousse. I can't really tell which is cake and which is the mousse. Maybe it is just too small... If this is consider as a cake, it will be too paste-like, if it is a mousse, then it is not light enough. However, I do like the chocolate and don't mind trying the larger version...

I didn't like the cupid, think cheesecake will be a better bet. I just pop the entire thing into my mouth.

Between the sheets, the top chocolate sheet is not as smooth as the Sweet pleasure from BakerZin. This ganache layered piece of indulgence was my favourite among the entire lot. With a good blend of almond and hazelnut, the smooth and crunchy texture just makes me crave for more. The hazelnut taste is just right, not too much and thus not overshadowing the choco. It is a pity this is alittle too small.

Cactus was something that has too much stuff... practically confusing my taste buds, you got cinnamon, chestnut, rum and chocolate. Moreover, the chocolate mousse is on the rough side and thus wasn't my favourite at all.
