Metrocakes CNY Collection 2011

The Fortune Cracker

While most Chinese New Year goodies or gifts are shaped in the form of a koi, MetroCakes surprised us with a gigantic fire cracker. This Fortune Cracker ($98.80) may sound pricey to most but do keep in mind that delivery of the cake has been taken care of and that most 3D cakes are relatively expensive for the amount of icing sugar used and workmanship.

Some time back, we purchased angry birds cake toppers and these sugary characters are priced at $45+.

So as a Chinese New Year gift, this does sound attractive as apart from the lovely appearance of this cake, beneath the fondant is a moist, dense and rich chocolate swiss roll. A remake of their log cake.

The Fortune Cracker 2

The characteristics of MetroCakes' creations often inclined towards rich flavours with a dense yet moist sponge so one can expect that this chocolate mousse with a slight orange flavour to be acceptable by chocolate fans.

Treasure Cove

The Treasure Cove ($68.80) consists 2 dozens of orange flavor cupcakes customized to welcome the Year of the Rabbit. Like all cupcakes, the top layer of icing sugar is more for decorative purpose rather than for eating. The niche of this creation is the convenience of cupcakes. No hassle to cut and divide. Moreover, with designs ranging from the Fire Cracker, Rabbit, Red Packet, Mandarin Oranges and Yellow Clover, this serves as a perfect cooperate gift or an item for potluck. Taste-wise, the slight orange taste complements nicely with the not-so-sweet and not oily cake, making it a good twist to the conventional Chinese New Year goodies.

Special thanks to Cerissa for the complementary cakes.

Logcakes by Metrocakes

I have mentioned previously that MetroCakes is one bakery that specializes not only in baking and customizing cake but also in their speedy delivery services. Last minute cake orders or busy schedule? Fret not!

Orders placed before 11am can be delivered on the same day, between 6pm to 9pm and orders placed before 6pm can be delivered on the next day from 1pm to 5pm. Sounds convenient, right?

For those who have intention to order log cakes for this festive period. Most places have started their sale of log cakes and to enjoy early bird discount, one will have to place their orders quick as most early bird promotions end by 30th November (at least I have come across a few).

For MetroCakes, one can enjoy 25% off the usual price if an online order is placed by 30th November 2010. So don't miss out the good deal.

Enhanted Woods

There are two flavours of log cakes offered by MetroCakes, namely Enchanted Woods and Christmas Knight. The former is a chocolate mousse cake with two layers of rich chocolate mousse and rum soaked cherries sandwiched between chocolate sponge, topped with mini eclairs.

Our criteria for log cakes are simple. Not too pricey and well-received by many. I happened to have a gathering of 8 last weekend and hence this 1kg cake manages to feed >10 (including us and Yuan's family members) and the verdict is...

Thumbs up to it being not-so-sweet, nods for the fresh chocolate sponge and mousse and about 4 of my friends, not forgetting Yuan's mummy asking where this cake is purchased. In summary, the cake was wiped out within an hour.

Apart from MetroCakes' niche in its delivery service, we have to agree that the cake is very fresh, thereby explaining the soft and moist texture. With the rum soaked cherries, this does show resemblance to a black forest cake. A flavour that won't go wrong to most unless you have people allergic to chocolate.

Enhanted Woods cross-section

Christmas Knight, which we have not tried is defined by MetroCakes to be an all-time favourite for its milky hazelnut cream with crushed hazelnut bits cushioned on chocolate sponge, finished with a generous layer of dark chocolate fudge.

The pricing of the log cakes are as follows,
500g - $44.90
1kg - $59.90
1.5kg - 79.90
2kg - $99.90
Note that all prices have include delivery.

As mentioned earlier, there is a 25% discount off the usual price for any online order by 30th Nov 2010.
Use voucher code: christmas2010p to enjoy this offer now.

Last but not least, many thanks to Cerissa for the complementary log cake from Metrocakes.

MetroCakes

On every special occasion, we always want the best for our loved ones and MetroCakes makes it easy by providing their customized service to make every occasion more memorable. Imagine, the joy of receiving a cake or miniatures when delivered right to your office or doorstep from your friends and loved ones. The element of surprise is bound to bring smiles.

The niche about MetroCakes is their comprehensive website to provide easy ordering. Moreover, they are extremely speedy in their delivery. For instance, orders placed before 11am can be delivered on the SAME day, between 6pm to 9pm while orders placed before 6pm can be delivered on the next day from 1pm to 5pm. The best part, MetroCakes offered FREE delivery for all orders of whole cakes or every order of miniatures above $40 so birthday celebrations can be done in a more convenient and affordable manner.

It may sound like a web business but MetroCakes has a nice shopfront, with the choice of whites and an open kitchen concept at 774 North Bridge Road.

MetroCakes

The selection offered is very extensive and we are very honoured to receive a box of MetroCakes'miniatures featuring all 16 different flavors for us to sample.

MetroCakes I

The packaging and presentation is lovely that we don't deny the fact that they do make ideal gifts and disposable cutlery are included within their packaging for convenience of consumption.

Yuan and I tried 4 selections from this eye-catching selection, namely

Triple Thrill, Tropic Party, Dark Knight
(From L to R), Triple Thrill, Tropic Party, Dark Knight

Triple Thrill is MetroCakes' version of blackforest. The creamy chocolate mousse does evoke my memories towards Sweet Secret. Not sure if you remember the good old days of Sweet Secret for their raisin scones and creamy mousse miniatures.

Tropic Party falls short in expectation, since my benchmark is Ritz Carlton's mango mousse. The bulk of it is light vanilla sponge with a nice tint of mango and whipped cream.

Dark Knight, rich belgium chocolate mousse with crushed hazelnut bits. The entire combination works like a nice chocolate truffle. Lovely.

Two to Tango, a mango cheesecake, generously topped with mango chunks will appeal to most, given its light and smooth texture.

OJ Rhapsody, Two to Tango, The Duke of Earl
(From L to R), OJ Rhapsody, Two to Tango, The Duke of Earl

As for the other 12, the cheesecakes' series caught my sister's attention and she finished the Oreo Cheesecake (Ebony and Ivory), Blueberry Cheesecake (Bluebells), NY Cheesecake (The New Yorker) and Strawberry Cheesecake (Lady in Red) in 2 consecutive mornings. According to her, the cheesecake are smooth but the base is alittle too moist to her liking. Overall, the flavours are quite mild and I guess her appetite says it all.

Strawberry Shortcake (Strawberry Sweetheart) will disappoint if one fancies the Japanese version (e.g. Tampopo or Patisserie Glace) as the cream used is slightly richer with a coarser sponge. Durian mousse (Kingpin) is ok but durian fanatics would prefer the rich version offered by Goodwood Park.

The remaining selections do appeal to my daddy, for he is someone who prefers his cakes to have more body. Moreover, the cakes remain soft and delicious despite being kept in the fridge for about 4 days.

After several birthday celebrations with my colleagues, I realize there is a handful of people who prefers cakes that are lighter on the palate with more cake content. In this case, I will recommend MetroCakes to this group of people, not only for the convenience but also for the quality this place has to offer.

Many thanks to Cerissa for the complimentary box of miniatures.
