Mooncakes by Emicakes

Emicakes Mooncake

We received a D24 Durian Mooncake and a Mango Mooncake from Emicakes and naturally being Singapore's No.1 Durian Cake Maker, we had high expectations, particularly when we regard Emicakes to have one of the better durian cakes.

Comparing Emicakes' Ultimate D24 Durian Cake, one might be slightly disappointed with the D24 mooncake as it adopts a creamier and less pulpy filling. When eaten chilled, it does show resemblance to good quality durian ice-cream but lacks the richness which durian lovers tend to look out for.

Snowskin is slightly sticky and on the sweet side so these may appeal to the sweet tooth. On the other hand, the Mango Mooncake is very different from what Goodwood Park Hotel has to offer. Instead of a strong mango puree filling, this is closer to a mango pudding with slices of mango.

Given Yuan's strong liking for durians, his preference was inclined towards the Mango Mooncake given its light and refreshing overall taste. As for me, I would prefer the D24 durian mooncake for the sweet contrast between the creamy filling and soft snowskin.

For fans of Emicakes, do order your mooncake early. Early bird special is from 20 Aug to 19 Sept. Please visit emicakes.com.sg for more information.

Lastly, many thanks to Ms. Abigail, Marketing Executive of Emicakes (S) Pte Ltd for the complimentary mooncakes.

Durian Cake

Talking about durian treats, there are a few popular names in Singapore. Apart from the durian fiesta @ Goodwood Park Hotel and durian buffet @ Carlton Hotel, other choices for durian by-products includes Emicakes, Angie the Choice, Jane's Cake station and 717 Trading.

Emicakes has 3 types of durian cakes with varying percentage of durian pulp namely classic ($33.30, 20cm), premium ($42.80, 20cm), and ultimate ($51.90, 20cm); ultimate is not available off the shelf so pre-ordering is required. Apart from the pure durian cakes, they also have a D24 Durian Espresso ($42.80, 20cm) and eggless alternatives.

Premium D24 Durian Cake I

Like Goodwood Park Hotel, the durian cakes are frozen and has to be thawed for more than 2 hours before serving.

Premium D24 Durian Cake II

This is a combination which most bakeries will adopt when durian cake is concerned. Durian-flavoured cream, vanilla sponge and durian pulp filling to provide a refreshing after-taste, particularly when served chilled.

Having eaten the creations at Goodwood Park Hotel and Carlton Hotel lately, Emicakes' durian filling is alittle diluted and blend; lacking the punch from what Goodwood Park (Durian mousse cake - $8.50+ per slice) has to offers. Carlton Hotel (Durian cake - $6+ per slice) fares better for its lighter, fluffier cream and softer sponge so we personally felt that Emicakes' Premium D24 Durian Cake is expensive (i.e. $42.80 for 6 servings) since it has 3 layers of sponge with lots of butter cream and minimal durian pulp.

Durian puffs from Emicakes

Before I know about Goodwood Park Hotel's famous durian deli, daddy will always buy durian goodies from Emicakes. Since young, they have been known to be Singapore No. 1 durian maker. Since I didn't manage to get Jane's durian cake and yet I am near Jalan Kayu, I simply cannot resist not eating durians. Hence, I managed to persuade daddy to get me durian puffs.

There are 3 types of D24 products, be it their durian cakes or durian puffs and the choice is obvious if you don't mind the pungent smell of durians. With the most amount of durian pulp and the least cream is what Emicakes termed as Ultimate and if you prefer something mild with a tint of durian pulp, then Classics is what the staff at Emicakes will recommend. Prenium will be somewhere in between.

Their durian puffs are sold in the following pricing
Ultimate D24 puffs (12 puffs) - $18.00,
Premium D24 Puffs (6 puffs) - $8.00,
Ultimate D24 puffs (4 pcs) - $7.00,
Classic D24 puffs (12pcs) - $7

Since I am ok with durians, Ultimate is the way to go. No doubt the filling is generous, the durian pulp can be felt in every bite and the bittersweet durian just makes me so yummy but pay attention to the price, each piece costs a hefty $1.50 (if you purchase 12 puffs) and $1.75 (if only 4 pieces are purchased).

Now why do I suddenly sound so negative? Because the puff pastry is alittle hard and I would say Goodwood Park Hotel's fare far more better. Those generous durian pulp in each fluffy profiterole is so unforgetable despite me eating thrice. Based on April 2007, these bite-sized pastries are priced at $1.80 per piece, $10.50 for 6 pieces, and $34 for 20 pieces). So, isn't the choice clear now?

Anyway, final note, all UOB cards are entitled a 10% discount.
